Am I the only one here or is anyone else cutting vinyl at almost 1:30 am?
I did have a break when Peter Mindham bought my mug presS back and went for 3 pints at 11:30 till 12:30 but going to be here till 3am at least , got the sleeping bag and pillow out of the van that is normally used at festivals ready for sleeping on till work at 8am.

Steve, I can’t cut vinyl at this time of the day as I work from home just now and other people would complain. Be alright when I get my own place though.
Still I do manage to get weeding and design work done. In fact I have just finished some design work for a customer.

i stopped doing that, when i realized that the type of customer that would have you working that late, is the type that moans at any price. and the only loyalty he has is to his wallet.

    hope this is worth it

Thats how late it is and thats how much I cant be bothered going home to cook something

I feel your pain Steve. I did a lot of that sort of thing for quite a few years after I started in this line of work.

I try not to do it now, although it is still easy to get sucked into pulling some long hours stuff. Usually after I’ve bitten off more than I can chew.

    Hope the opening goes ok.

I’m a Stay at home dad during the day, then from 5pm till 2am I am a home business. Then back up at 6. I try to sleep in on Sundays to catch up, but I end up working all weekend because I am a sucker too.

You can tell it’s time to go to bed when the words on the screen make no sense and start moving around.

There will be plenty of time for sleeping when your rich and famous, just hold out to then.

Good luck getting the new shop open.

ooooohhhhhh, sounds painful!!!! Hope you’re on the mend now.

As for working until all hours – been there and done it before. But now I value my time away from work too much. I work 9-5ish. But I will work on artwork or quotes in the evenings if I have too.

I do the same thing….Quite often work until 3 or 4am and then up for work at 7.30am.

My Dad’s tinting business gives me the odd manifestation job to do, usually quite large, and they usually ask for a price several weeks to a couple of months ahead of the job. I usually get a sketch, with no real measurements bar the rough size of the window. I am expected to give cost per unit….

The problem arises when we get the go ahead and I only get 2 to 3 days notice that 40m of 50mm squares one 100mm centres are required….or whatever the job turns out to be. I know it’s easy to draw, it’s the cutting, weeding and taping that takes me into the early hours! Then because it’s usually opal frost, I need to highlight all the work so the fitters can see where to start from 🙂

As I can’t afford to leave my job at the moment, (fingers crossed for about 2 months from now 🙂 ) it really takes it’s toll on me.

I keep stressing that customers can’t demand we fit a particular job "on Wednesday" when it’s Monday. This causes a row at home 🙁

And like now, I can’t do anything for my business because work have sent me to Barking and Dagenham Council for the week and I’m stuck in a hotel!

    Lol Rant over 🙂

I work from about 6 or 6:30 am till about 6 in the evening.
When my plotter is running I lurk on sign forums or do design work.
I used to work at nights till I was about half dead but I’m getting too old for that stuff.
In the evenings I just veg with my youngest son.
Invariably in winter I get lots of painted work, and I’m too cheap to heat my garage. So oftentimes I’ll have a 4×8 sign laid out on the dining room table.
I cook supper every night too for the whole family and sometimes I even get the dishes washed.
    Love….Jill

Its easy for me to say,
but if you have to work long hours, you really need to evaluate if its worth it.

If you are fit and young like me 😉 then 20 hours a day is no problem(yes I have been there)…but its fine if you are realising £35 ph minimum(working from home or a business)

but You need to earn about £90 ph for what you do. that way you should not need to work all the hours god sends…just 8 a day, or if work is slack 2 or 3

Strange how signage is supposed to be a good earner,
but still people work their butts off.

    Dont live to work
    work to live
    life is short…..
    Enjoy your work…
    but love your life

strange that it’s usually non-signmakers that think this!!

too true…or you might end up working all day then coming home and spending umpteen hours on a signmaking forum :lol1:

I agree with Peter – dont undervalue your time and charge a reasonable rate for what you do (£35 per hour is reasonable). If you’re going to have to be up all night then double it!

Otherwise – go home and spend some time with your family and let some other mug do it!!

See my time on this post… yep, i am going to be here all night

Bloody printer… bloody cnc and bloody colegues with crazy ideas.

I would leave but at 5am I am likely to change clear vinyl for white vinyl.

I normally do late mornings to evenings… i am single so that is why

i normally call it a day at 3am on here… work all day doing signs till around 6pm-7pm… home dinner… on the net while watching tv… then into office to work on the site behind the scenes… i get most done from about 12pm-3am as the boards slow down and so do the emails.
im determined to cut back till about midnight these days… ill see how i go. :lol1:

A couple of weeks ago to get an urgent (though good paying) order out I had three hours sleep out of 65 hours.

Spent three complete nights in the office, printing, laminating, cutting, heat pressing.

Had help for two nights and a Monty Python boxset for the third.

I tell myself never again but then again it’s Sunday afternoon and I have just got back from replacing the front on an old light box. (PS I hate old light boxes)

Dave, I know it is true, I have seen the time you make some of your posts. Just saying that your website confirms what most of us already know about the hours you work.
Long as nobody does what I did and make themselves extremely ill through overworking which is so easy to do.

Check the time. And I’ve been here an hour already.
