I have quoted for this sign, but not sure if I am too cheap or what.

The client keeps coming back for more signs. Put one up, 6 weeks later he wants it down and replacing.

size is 15 x 4 ft, on white gloss alu-panel, using MD-7 black vinyl.

Also an image of what we will be replacing.

I am not surprised he changes his signs every few months… I am certainly a little too cheap.

How much mark up do you add onto your raw materials.

I charge about £25.00 p/h labour, the design took next to no time as it is a copy of an existing sign with their addresses added.

I usually add 50% on my raw costs, and estimate the time it will take produce and install. I am falling short somewhere.

When I took over the company I increased the prices, which has show positively in the accounts, and has also reduced the number of time wasters, who want everything for nothing.

I need to get a price list together for my materials, as at the moment I look in the suppliers catalogue and work from that.

I am ashamed to say what I have quoted and really quite p***ed off with myself.

    The positive of it is:

They have 4 branches, I have done the signage for 2 of them, and will be doing their 3rd. One branch I did the sign and 6 weeks later he wanted it down and the new alu-panel on going up.

I have made some cash out of him, and he’s a great payer (ie cash on the day) 😀 which always get preferential treatment.

Where can I source the price it sign guide?

If you subscribe to SignCraft you do get a free pricing guide, also online access to their pricing guide.
It’s based on your shop rate, an hourly fee based on varying factors.
    My shop rate is $75/hr.
(too lazy to do the dollars to pounds thing)
I always multiply my materials X three.
You have to figure out your hourly rate, even typing all that info into your sign program takes time.
In this instance I priced as if for a 4’x16′ sign as you will only have a small offcut of 1’x4′ which you may or may not ever sell to another client.

As others have said get the Price guide as it gives a good starting point.

When I started someone said multiply your materials by 3x. That is then 1x for the purchase. 1x your profit on materials and 1x for making the sign.
this doesn’t always work out but often good for a rough guide.

Depends on competition in your area what you can mark up materials but I usually mark up 100% on subtrates and sign blanks before I add any vinyl and time costs.

So 2x 8×4 sheets. depends if using Hoarding board (£26/sheet) or double sided ACM (£45/sheet), so substrate alone price could be between £52 and £90 plus delivery charge £15.
Vinyl supply costs without any work £10.
Costing Vinyl work can be done in many different ways: per letter, per area or work out time plus materials. I usually do a quick calculation of a per letter price compare it with a sq metre price and check it in the Price guide and they usually come out pretty close.
For the lettering on your sign by all the methods it comes out between £150 and £170.
So the basic sign made up in your workshop is between £200 and £275 .
Then take into account all the other things which take your time and it goes up from there.
    Discussing with customer takes time.
Design and layout. Even if design all done for you sitting down at the computer and typing in the words and layout of design must take at least an hour of your time.
    Then cutting and weeding.
    Then making up board.
    Then fitting Board.

Probably the lowest I would go with this sign is £350 and £550 top end.

    Cheers for the advice.

I bought in a load of black vinyl as I know this client will getting a few signs done.

I usually work out my costs and wasn’t adding nearly enough markup. Vinyl I charge with mark up, and charge p/hr cutting, which in some ways covers weeding cost. I then estimate the cost of the labour.

I must make up more markup. I am just working on a spread sheet, which will give me post per Sqft, pSqm for my most common materials.

I must have lost quite a bit of cash the last few months. 🙁
