  • Advice required on adhesive and locators please?

Posted by David Mitchell on November 23, 2014 at 10:39 am

Hi again, I’m looking for advice on best adhesive to use when fixing plastic stand off locators to dibond sheet,

Being a novice I have found out that General superglue just doesn’t work. Hopefully someone can help me.

Call me a dinosaur but I do not trust ANY glue for this purpose. Dibond letters can cause a headache if they land on your head!
Instead, I use stainless screws with a head size similar to the male part of the standoffs, and screw them into the dibond – taking care to not go through to the other side of course. Then I pop them into the female part just as before.
You can use stamp ink to colour the screw heads to mark the installation plan.

Never had a failure that way.

Acrylic letters are different, in that the chloroform "adhesive" is actually a solvent, and "welds" the two parts together.

    Simon.

I’m confused Simon as often is the case, I bought in letters cut from acrylic, they can with male parts glued on.

I’m fitting them to a flat dibond sheet, but I need to fix the female locators to the sheet, screwing would leave me with screws poking through ?

Oh sorry David my bad I thought you meant the letters were dibond.
In any case, you should screw the female parts to the base, do not glue them, specially if they are the female part, as that is usually flexible Nylon, and as far as I am aware NOTHING will stick to that. Short screws or thicker dibond Im afraid!
