  • advice please on applying Digital Vinyl Print?

Posted by ImagineUK on May 27, 2003 at 9:40 am

As above. Can anybody give me a rough guide to applying to self-adhesive digital print. Im most concerned about scratching the image with the squeegee. Would a felt one be best??

Any help will be appreciated (however obvious as this is my first job using digital print)

    Regards

Use a felt squeegee if you can. You can apply application paper to it first aswell.

what size is it and is it just a square or rectangle..

why not tape it up with app tape, then apply?

yes if you have one then use a felt squeegee.. if not you could wrap a thin cotten cloth round a plastice one and apply.. but remeber do a practice go first with some scrap.. just to get a feel for the new cloth tool 😉

its 600mm square. i was considering app tape but again was worried about damaging the image. A bit silly really bearing in mind this stuff is supposed to be waterproof and UV resistant so im sure app tape wont hurt lol 😆 Thanx lads.

no. dont worry.. app tape is fine.. if it comes off then you should get back on the phone to the printer.. 😆 😆 😆 😆

You need to first ask, how has the digital vinyl been made!
If the digital printer is a solvent printer – then the print will be pretty well bomb proof and you can apply as normal cadcam vinyl.
Howver if the digital printer is an inkjet… The digital vinyl will have a special coating, which although waterproof and UV stable, will not like being rubbed with a squeege………….
If it is an inkjet print, you will almost certainly need to overlaminate the print before you try and lay it down, cheers CJ 😕

    Just a quick question rob,

Have you applied a PC600 print across a recess and if so, has it come out ok or does it look really stretched…??

I’ve got to apply a digi print across a ford pick up transit (side doors), it’s diamond shaped and the two tips are within the re-cess…

    Any tips…

dont stretch into it mate.. go in and out..
all digi printes regardless to the machine they are printed on, will have some lightening of colour and stretch.. just depends on what, where and how you do it to keep it minimal.

    in and out! then heat….

hi chriss and welcome to the boards mate.. 😛 thanks for taking the time to post 😉

on what you have said.. yes you are correct! however, i would not recommend using inkjet images on a vehicle other than maybe for short term promotions.. i.e. 3-6 months if that! 🙄
applied only to flat panels and edge sealed with overlaminate.. then maybe you will get a fair bit longer.. how long i do not know.. i have never tried.
i would strongly recommend “not” applying graphics made in this fashion that pass over recessed areas.

We always prefer to use a roller rather than a squeegee. No chance of scratches then.

Make sure the roller is a medium density silicone one, you need a bit of softness but not too much. Never use a hard one!
