  • Advice on wrapping a 52 reg vauxhall combo

Posted by Liam Pattison on May 24, 2010 at 10:34 am

Hi my Brother is looking to wrap his 52 reg Vauxhall Combo. Just a colour change, white to silver (although i will probably try to convince him to have something else). He wants to get it back on the road to use for smaller jobs.

No problem with the wrapping itself, it’s just he normally only fits and has never had to worry about supplying anything.

So i was just looking for some advice on what material he should get.

Nothing too fancy or expensive, just something that will do the job. Is macfleet 6500 any good for this?

Or would anybody recommend anything else. Also sorry to be a nuisance but any rough idea on how many meters i should order??

I will calculate that myself, but just wondered if anyone could give me a guide or a head-start.

    Thanks for any advice

    Liam

    Hi Liam.

Personally I’d avoid Macfleet! Has a ‘dull’ matt/semi-gloss finish when finished. Also snaps when cold, splits when heated and changes colour with heat.

    Just my personal view!

For a Combo, Avery 900 would be fine, 3m without a doubt if costs permit.

Just be carefull about door handles/central locking etc…

    Hi Matt,
thanks for the advice, i’ll look into the Avery 900 option, will take your word for it as you seem to know your stuff.

Don’t think he’ll stretch to the 3m, work was quiet for them for a while last year so slight cash flow problems. Luckily work has gone nuts for them this year, which is why they need the second van on the road.

    Thanks again

I’d go for Hexis 20000 or 3M 85 series, dedicated wrap vinyls basically rather than a normal cast. Easy to fit and easy to handle, nice and wide and pre laminated.

I agree Jon but I think Liam is looking at a media that will do the job at a lowish price.

3m or VWS all the way but 900 will do the job on a budget.

How much is the 900 p/m?

Can’t really post the price but I get it over half the price less than the Hexis!

Thanks Jon, but as Matt suggested i think 3m would be too expensive for my bro right now.

He fits a lot of the Avery 900 for one of his customers i found out since asking this, so think that’s what he’ll go for.

Thanks again for the recommendation Matt, i know who to blame if it goes wrong 😉

    Hi again Liam

I’m sure your bro knows his stuff, but with 900 it’s imperative that it’s heated to 80+ degrees when in recesses to erase its memory! Not direct heat tho as it will burn the vinyl!

    Good luck mate!

    Hi Matt,

thanks for that, i appreciate it. I will TRY telling him that! Some times he doesn’t like to take advice from me, (his younger brother) even if i say i got it from another experienced fitter.

Him and my Dad work together, strictly as freelance fitters, they have been wrapping for similar sort of time to you i think, but they’re not so good with buying materials in etc as they never really get involved with that.

Will let you know how it goes.

thanks again for the materials advice, exactly what i needed

    liam,
surley as an experienced fitter he would know which material is good or bad?
so if he wont take your advice, and the opinion off others, why ask the question?
Personally wrapping an old combi to hide its age is a no no anyway.

Well that’s your opinion mate, some might say a little snobbish. As i mentioned he is very tight for money right now, had some very bad times, i don’t think he’s exactly trying to ‘hide it’s age’ he is wrapping his old van so that he feels it is slightly more presentable when he goes on fitting jobs. He might think about buying a new vehicle when he gets some cheques in!

He would not have a clue about buying vinyls in (or the time or the money) so has asked me to do it, which is why i was asking for second opinions here.

And i was making a joke about him not taking fitting advice from his younger brother.

    thanks for you help

I think you’re right Peter – I tried a similar exercise on an Old Combi I know yet despite my best efforts I couldn’t disguise its age 😕
