  • advice on manipulating adobe acrobat 7 files

I’m a bit of a ‘rookie’ when it comes to file conversion or file manipulation
and was wondering, if a client gives me an adobe acrobat version 7 file,
what software do I need to be able to open that file and cut the image
    in vinyl?

Would appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction with this one
as I’ve considered buying photoshop thinking that this may give us more
options for opening and producing client logos. 🙄

    Hi George,

We use Gerber Omega ‘Composer’ and FlexiSign for cutting vinyl,
and Coral Draw 11 for other drawings and file conversion.

you can import it into coreldraw and manipulate it if it is a vector pdf

Neil, make sure they leave the image as an editable file as if the PDF file is locked you wont be able to do anything with it.

    Hi Martin,

If they left the file as ‘editable’ do we still need some Adobe software to
    manipulate the file contents? 😕

No it should import to corel, but if not left editable you wont be able to do anything with it manipulation wise.

Good luck with Corel, although still my favourite design tool, the import filters are probably it’s weakest point. Not coincidentally, Adobe products (illustrator & photoshop) are best at importing pdfs although photoshop will not give you manipulation of the vectors but just rasterise the image.

Signlab makes a good effort of importing pdfs but can trip over images embedded. If you buy Acrobat professional you can output the pdf as a .ps file which will usually import into all common vector programs but at a cost!

If you get really stuck you could always post here and get someone to convert.

Thanks for the info. guys, especially Colin.

On this occasion, maybe I’ll see if I someone can convert it for me
to see how well it works out.

    thanks for your help. 🙂

Not sure I agree with Colin regarding import filters in Corel, I have always regarded them as being very good certainly in X3 pdf import is very good as is eps and ai. I have full Acrobat 5 so not new and any pdf files which are not coming in cleanly can be saved as ps or eps, these virtually always import as expected into Draw. One of the main problems with pdf is that there are so many pdf creators out there, either freebies on the web or a ‘publish’ filter within sign/drawing/dtp applications, some work better than others when I do get a rare problem the pdf has come from Quark or similar. If budget allows I would always have full Acrobat along side Corel and Signlab or similar.

The biggest problems I get seem to be Mac EPS & PDF for importing. Some open up fine but trying to do anything with them…..grrr

Also Neil many clients still need to be told how to create decent PDF file. On many occasions I still get PDF’s with bitmaps that I know are vectors in the originals.

Hi Neil, I use Omega too. If you import the PDF into corel then export as an AI version 8, then import straight to Omega, usually no problems.

well thanks guys for all you help on this one, and
it’s been useful reading your tips and pointing me in the
right direction about the ‘cans and can’ts’ with file opening.

    cheers

    Neil 😀
