    Hi all

As you may remember i was asking for help with a design with etch vinyl for a curves shop. now customer is happy with the design and am applying it on Saturday. as Ive never used this vinyl before. Ive been doing some test pieces with my windows @ home. now for my question when you apply, do you apply on the outside or inside i prefer the outside as i think it looks alot better but will it stand up to dirt etc

    Oracal 8510

I think it looks better if applied on the inside, but just my opinion,
and at this time of year, better to be fitting inside in the warm!

Outside, because the sun sort of highlights the texture.
It also makes an interesting shadow/3D effect on the glass.
You may have to worry about people picking at it (rare here but common there I hear)
I have tried both types of Oracal, the coarse and the fine.

Never really thought about it before – but I would normally apply it on the inside as I have always thought that was how it was supposed to be done.

If its any help, I am using the very same vinyl in these videos.

Obviously i am fitting dry, but if worried use rapid-tac2. however, in this weather the glass will be cold and much more forgiving.

Martin…..I think it looks much better on the inside giving the shine and depth from the glass when viewed from outside….Cheers

yep, i agree on that too… inside looks much better. fitted outside i think it looks like false etch, by that i mean you can tell where the shine of the glass and the silk finish of the etch vinyl starts.

the videos contradict me, because in those videos i am applying on the outside of the glass, but its indoors within an office block corridor. regardless, ide still have fitted the etch on the inside of the windows facing out into the corridor. but if you look close there are thin slat blinds in the windows. those blinds are actually in between the double glazed glass sealed unit, making it impossible to fit on the inside of each office as you would not see the etch for the blinds.

    i can ramble eh? 😀

It’s warmer fitting inside and when you’re up a level or 5…well 😀

Defo fitting inside, but watch out if its cold outside as it will make the vinyl more brittle as it gets close to the glass (as I found out today when I stuck the squeegee through!!). DO IT DRY…….

I use Oracal 8510 quite a lot and always fit on the inside. I also use a lot of Opal Frost, but much prefer the silver etch when making manifestation and patterns as I don’t reckon the Opal has much visual impact, and it takes on whatever colour is behind the glass anyway…..defeating the object of manifestation!

I fit dry 9 times out of 10 too, the odd bubble here and there in the glue soon go away.

Another vote for fitting inside, think it looks better as others have said. Apply dry if you can.
Might be an idea to ask the customer which they would prefer though, explain the pro’s and con’s of each maybe show them a small section.

Yep another vote here for inside. Another thing to take into consideration is that will be less prone to those picky fingers too when the shop is closed if it is on the inside.

    Cheers

Yeh, but round here we get people in the shops picking at the vinyl 😀

    More business I guess 😛

I get it with silver reflective window film at a Carphone Warehouse call center near me….they stand talking on their phones, idly picking at the film…. every couple of months I have to go and replace a piece 180" x 60" piece lol It really annoys my brother that people can just idly destroy other peoples work!
