  • Advice on drawing copy that is wrapped on curved object

Posted by Simon Strom on July 17, 2009 at 3:34 pm

We have a customer that wants to remove the vinyl they have now (which I photo-shopped out) and replace it with a new design. I need to draw what the new ones will look like on the photo before they sign off on it. I’ve drawn a few drawings with copy on curved walls like this before and usually could just fudge it with the fish eye lens tool because the walls weren’t very drastic. This one is definitely throwing me a curve ball though.

Each section of the wall is 12" high. The middle ring copy will be ITC Kabel Demi at 6" height and the bottom ring copy will be Kabel Light 4 7/8" high. Anybody have any idea(s) of how to distort this copy so it displays as relatively accurate?

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas on this one.

    Simon,

I’m not 100% on this but I would have thought fitting the text to a curve first and then just distort it with the perspective or envelope tool should do it

Thanks Glenn. I didn’t think of using Envelopes. I’ve never used them before, but I think you’re correct in that that’s the best way to achieve this. Now, I just have to figure out how to use Envelopes! 😀

    I’ve just had a go Simon…

It’s not perfect but with a bit of tweaking it should work

Remember when the text is still on the curve it can be altered by moving the curve to fine tune.

Thanks. Glenn & Graeme. I just finally did it, but don’t think it was done very well. I just needed to move on to other things. Did you use Illustrator to do that Glenn? What steps did you use if you don’t mind me asking? I tried in Illy, FreeHand, and Photoshop and just couldn’t get it look "correct".

    Simon,

    I did it in Corel

I first drew the curve and then fitted the text to path….

I then used the Perspective tool to tweak the shape so that the ‘G’ didn’t look like it was toppling backwards

I haven’t used Illustrator before so I don’t know about how you would change the perspective but in corel it is just a case of dragging nodes until you are happy with the outcome

Haven’t given it a go, but work on things like this all the time. Place your scan into illustrator…draw the curve then type to the curve. Copy..paste into photoshop then use the transform tools to give the image persepective…layer effects to give the dropshadow. 30 second job in Illustrator..then into photoshop to finish the perspective….total time for this would be no more than 5 minutes work, but I have been doing digital artworks for the last 15 years!
