Hi there. We intend to install some illuminated signs onto industrial warehouse building with cladding. It will be possibly made as aluminium tray 6m x 1,1m with set of stainless built up lettering ca 400mm tall . As the sign may end up being quite heavy, my concern is if it will be safe to fix it directly onto cladding or would it need any construction behind it? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

What is the return dimension on the tray and the letters?

tray return is ca 50mm and the letters probably round the same, they are halo illuminated then there is logo of ca 100mm deep.

i’d say it is some standard, trapezoid recess around 35-40mm deep and 80mm wide on the open end then 170mm flat surface and so on…

my guess is this will be ok use tec cladding screws to fix the tray angle to the cladding.
I have fitted a heavy framework and sign to the corner of a cladded building using these screws and if in doubt for peace of mind a couple of butterfly toggle bolts wont do any harm either.

We tend to use 25x25mm Angle the whole length and tec bolt to the building, does it have to be an ali tray why not dibond a lot easier and lighter to work with

thanks John, peace of mind is what we need 🙂 i will be looking for a fitter (or team) who could fix another one of these in Dartford… if anyone could recommend someone it would be great too.

i was thinking of dibond, but it tends to "hang down" sometimes, specially when letters are heavy (steel) and one piece of tray has different "load" to another, also the face is kind of "wavey" unless we would use thicker 4-5mm stuff but it is going up with costs too…

Know what you mean Peter but you can always support the middle section we have installed 12mx1.8m signs with dibond this way

I always use angle the same dimension as the return, if you want more fixings go for an ‘L’ section angle to come down the cladding face more and use 2 fixings.

Also make sure the Tek Screws are the correct ones, there are different thread types.

If in doubt, I always think it’s worth getting access to inside the building to see if you can get at least 2 fixings for the top rail through to the inside using longer fixings.
