  • Advice needed with painting on composite, please?

Posted by David Hammond on August 26, 2015 at 10:17 am

Been to meet a customer who’s painting their shop front, and want’s their 16 year foamex old sign replacing.

They want the sign to match their painted shop front. I’m no expert but I don’t think a tin of gloss and roller is going to last too well, on a sheet of composite.

Any suggestions on what paint to use, and how to get an exact colour match???

That’s interesting – got a similar situation myself.
As my background is vehicle repairs and more specifically painting, my first thought is to get it sprayed in 2 pack car paint.
Trouble is, it’s horrible stuff ( that’s why I don’t do it anymore) and not really advisable to begoing out and there and chucking it on. Too many nasty chemicals and it makes a right mess that isn’t easy to clean up.
However, if you find a local bodyshop (a repairer not the soap seller) they could give you an idea of cost.
Wouldn’t take very long for a skilled bloke in a sprayshop to sort that – plus they would mix colours to whatever you wanted and only the quantity required. You might need to ask around to find out who is up for the job. Steer clear of the big national repairers as they probably wouldn’t be interested in anything other than insurance repairs. Or quote megabucks.
Will need a decent primer on there as paints don’t stick to aluminium either.

Show them the range of colours of the composite boards and make him match your colours for the shop that way no problem 😀

    Second Chris on this one….

Get him to match it to standard ACM colours available.

:lol1: if only it were that simple.

Not sure what colour they’re looking for, but I have seen a number of local shops where they have matched colours to the paintwork really well, and they’re not standard colours.

They’ll probably decide on a standard colour when they get the quote.

Am I missing something here ?
If your client is painting the shopfront , can’t you just use a Pantone, print to S/A vinyl and wrap to a board ?

Sounds stupid I know, but have I misunderstood the equation ?

I suppose yes, but a bit hit and miss don’t you think?

Even the bridge book we have has significant colour shifts between what comes out the machine and is in the book.

Whilst you could walk into a paint shop and get the paint mixed to the exact colour?

We paint composite panel almost daily. Get yourself a RAL swatch (usually about £100 or so), this gives you all the industry standard paint colours, similar to pantone for print except for paint 😀 . Find a local seller of Jotun Conseal paint which is a combined single pack paint and primer in one and get them to mix up your clients chosen RAL colour then just spray it on with a spray gun. Single pack wouldnt be suitable for cars etc but its fine for signage as they are high in the air and not moving anywhere lol

    Dave,

We wrote a post on this not so long ago… Check the link out below.

We compared Dibond & AluPanel for the purpose of this article

I just got a quote for this myself. 2- 10′ x 2′ panels sprayed light pink satin was 100 pounds each. If I had a spray booth it would be no problem to just key the surface and spray it. I tried about 10 different body shops locally and nobody would touch it, I finally found a guy out in the country who would even consider it.
I think a digital print flood coated onto the panels would be a better choice.

I’m just thinking of the time printing swatches off, trying to match to the colour of their paint.

I’ll make a few calls when I get 5mins see if we can find someone locally who will spray them up for us.

I think an RAL swatch would help.
