Advice needed on Website software?
Posted by Earl Smith on November 14, 2010 at 12:26 pmAs the title says, I am looking for web design software.
Being honest , I am an idiot when using web design software. I have no idea at all. I have played with Dreamweaver and its totally beyond me. I just need to drag and drop , use WYSIWYG , add links and add pages to the site as and when I need them.
No adding HTML or anything like that. Just design it using the templates provided in the program and then load it on the net.
Any recomendations??

Do it in photoshop, then give it to some student to convert it to html 🙂
That’s what I’ve done 🙂

quote Nicola McIntosh:heres one similar to what rob posted http://www.wix.com/start/wfree 😀
I would recommend this one as well, very easy to use, not very good for ecommerce though

I just looked at that moonfruit site, might give it a try for ecommerce. Wix is very good for a portfolio type website and gets good google search rankings or whatever you call it. You can build a shop site with wix, but it’s quite limited and i would not recommend it for that.
Thanks for posting that link

Netobjects gets my vote. Don’t think its any less able for being free.
I’ve done 5 pro websites with it and had huge numbers of positive comments about them all.
You see there is a huge fanbase that have prepared a very large number of formats/designs and stock layouts that are available to you. You simply (and it is simple) pick one and change colours etc to suit you. You can also buy designs which are typically £20 or so that are complete with header pages, catalogue pages etc which you simply replicate and customise. if you want a display site no problem. if you want a catalogue site that lets you use Paypal etc no problem. Superbly flexible and at each stage you get wysiwyg pages so no damage is done until you are satisfied with the layout and content – then you upload.
The tricky bit with all these is loading them up to your chosen server etc. For this your will need an FTP program too and your server details etc. These are also free and make the job easy but first time through they can be daunting. Depends on your expertise in these areas really and the assistance of a good server provider. I use Streamline as they are cheap, reliable and competent.Gerry
All in all very satisfying to do and once you’ve done one the next is even easier.

Gerry what version of Netobjects is free?? I’ve had it since Fusion MX and think they are now up to version 11. I have version 10 just upgraded it every now and again as the upgrade price was low. Not used it for a while but like you say it is really easy to use being drag and drop. I could be wrong but I thought the FTP was built in or maybe that’s just on a latter version than you have.

I got my version as a ‘lite’ freebie with a Mac/PC mag – must be almost 10 years ago now. It served me well but when I went into designing a fourth new site about 2 years ago I afforded myself the latest upgrade at the time which I did pay for (V10).
I opted for SmartFTP as my ftp software for file transfer to server as it is intuitive and layout is ideal. It is also free to download and was recommended by my server service provider.Gerry

going with rob here, moonfruit excellent allthough it relies on flash technology, the html versions arent that pretty…. but anyway I use it for several of my sites

The original post was for
"Being honest , I am an idiot when using web design software. I have no idea at all. I have played with Dreamweaver and its totally beyond me. I just need to drag and drop"
hence the simplest the better… – everyone seems to get their favourite even if it relies on flash etc….
My suggestion… go simple – go office live!!

Martin / Gerry,
I have the Netobjects Essentials which is the free version. Works well for me. The link is:

Yer it is really easy to use isn’t it Neil, the first version I had was free on a magazine so I knew you could get free copies. Once I had the free version registered when I decided to upgrade a couple of years latter I got a big discount because I was already on their system using the earlier version.
You can build some really good looking sites and add all sorts of effects simply by dragging and dropping.
