  • Advice needed on USB repeater Cable please?

Posted by Richard Such on June 11, 2012 at 2:49 pm

    Guys,

We are moving premises in the next couple of months . . . bigger and better! :lol1:

Question is this, I currently connect my CJV to my PC via a USB repeater cable.

Its going to be alot further away now and want the cabling to be neat and tidy i.e. not in view so am I best going down the Cat 5 converter route so I can have untold length of cable rather than more repeaters??

    Cheers

    Rich

I think if you use a good quality USB repeater, you should be OK for a about 20m (I can’t remember where I read that now). I’ve always used Lindy and had no problem running 5 of them from a PC to Mimaki CG-FX at sign shows. Alternatively, how about moving the RIP computer closer to the printer? I’ve never used those LAN to USB things before so I can’t really comment on the quality of them.

Yep about 20 to 30 metres for a USB repeater
However I was goingt ot suggest a cat 6 cable with if need be a USB converter to Ethernet converter at the ends their as far as I can tell also a Ethernet system that you can run via your power supply as long as the items your connecting are on the same line. Fleabay is usually e best bet for his.

A RIP/printer PC miles away from the printer is not good if u need to re-start prints and mess about. Suggest a re-think.

I have a 80mtr CAT5, after upgrading the Switch to something awesome, I now get decent gigabit comms down it, but it is not easy.

Best possible advise as always, keep your cables as short as possible.

Quite surprised that the printer is not a network one.. hmm

I think Mimaki still use USB on all of their printers, unless the new latex one has Ethernet? It beats using Firewire though, that was a pain in the Davina’s 🙄

I would have to agree with having a rethink though. The shorter the cable, the better.

Thanks for the replies guys . . . . gave up checking!! :lol1:

The thing is I’m having a seperate room built for the machine to be able to keep it at perfect temp in the winter and keep the fumes away from me! Cant imagine it does you any good being in contact with them!

This room ‘as the crow flies’ isn’t actually very far away from me, probably 8 metres or so but to put the cables out of site makes that alot longer.

I cant see any way of getting me and my puta any closer, I certainly don’t want to be sat in the corner away from natural light.

My friend suggested running it on a network????

Stafford, is this the kind of thing you mean?

It doesn’t say repeater but extension? I assume the ‘active’ bit means it resends the original signal rather than just an extension that allows the signal to break down more???

Yep, that’s the fella. The fact it says active tells me it’s a repeater rather than just an extension lead. Top quality cables from these guys. Definitely not the cheapest but I’ve had a 0% failure rate from them in probably 10 years!!
