The L stands for low carbon. 316L is generally used in the food industry. I would hazard a guess that 304L is the grade used for lettering.

Good to know! That’s what I get for believing somebody else (engraving company).

304 for interior, 316 (marine & food grade) for exterior, but there is quite a difference in the cost. If you can, quote both options (and reasons) to the customer and let them decide. Basically the 316 will weather better outside than the the 314

The finish of the stainless is usually defined as BP (bright polished or mirror) or DP1 (brush finish)

Hi guys,

304 is external grade and 316 is marine grade.

We tend to use 316 grade if the sign will be within 5 miles of the coast due to the salty atmosphere.

If your sign is going outside (not near a coast) then I wouldn’t worry about the extra expense for 316 grade. As long as your customer gives them a good clean now and then there shouldn’t be a problem.
