  • Advice needed layering cut vinyl graphics?

If you are overlaying one vinyl over another so that the words have a different coloured edge, how can you stop any bubbles on the top layer when you put it on the vehicle. Also is the monomeric grade fine for this or should it be thicker?

    Thanks.

Hi Dianne, I don’t think there is a way to stop this, the only advice is to layer up on the vehicle, if at all possible. If customers are applying themselves I always warn them about the ‘airline’, and give them the option of layering up themselves. Some will, some won’t.

theres a couple of reasons this happens, but the main one is that you form a ridge by applying the second layer. when you squeegee the two layers combined, onto the vehicle the squeegee almost bumps down from this ridge as you pass over it leaving a tiny layer of trapped air where the squeegee lost contact switching from one layer to the next.
as has been said, its best to apply in separate layers using some form of registration system to aid alignment.

    I always apply layers wet.
I stick the first layer down dry.
(occasionally I’ll do that wet also but not as often as I used to)
Then I use Rapid Tac application fluid to help position the second layer.
Follow the instructions on the bottle.
I always use cast vinyl on vehicles.
