• Advice needed

Posted by Gary Birch on March 3, 2007 at 7:38 pm

I have been asked whether I can supply the service of getting planning permission for some halo lit built up letters. Now first of all what is involved and is it very time consuming, what kind of charge should be involved. And thirdly if I decide against offering that service is there anyone that specialises in that service that you can recommend. Not sure if it matters but the job is in Huddersfield, West Yorks.

I hope that this makes sense and any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

can of worms springs to mind, I used to be asked the same thing but always say it up to the user to determine need for planning consent as it varies from area to area. Generally there just being lazy and looking to offload the hassle, and those that say go ahead probably havent bothered to apply. Just make sure its in your terms or on your quote somewhere that they take responsibility for obtaining consent.

    Hi
as far as i know some architects supply the service but they will rely on info from you regarding luminance etc. The rest is just standard planning application which they deal with all the time.

Gary, as John has said it varies from area to area, what some councils will allow others will turn down even though they are all suppose to be following the same guidelines. I would speak to your local planning office and get some sort of idea what sort of signage they prefer and use that knowledge to advise your customers but I wouldn’t actually get involved in the planning applications yourself, it can be time consuming but also who is going to pay for the application? If you pay the fees and the application is turned down are you ever going to get the money back from the customer? That would be my biggest worry because are they going to pay you if they don’t get anything.

    Hi Gary

As has been suggested it can be a nightmare, it all depends on the type of job and customer in question.

Ultimately it is the customers responsibility to gain appropriate planning permission, unless agreed otherwise. ( If you are already fitting signs you should be stating this on your quotations )
However my feelings are that anyone involved in supplying & fitting larger signs, should have a brief knowledge of the planning process and regulations.
While you may not be applying for planning consent yourself, you should be in a position to offer basic advice of what they can and can’t do in your local area.
Also consider that If you are designing more complex signs, its likely you’ll have to provide drawings and a detailed specification, for whoever is applying for planning permission.

Even if you never intend to apply for planning consent yourself, call up your local planning office and ask for a copy of the ( Outdoor Advertisements and signs – a guide for advertisers ) and also a copy of the supplementary planning guide for shopfronts and signs.

These will give an overview but remember the final decision will rest with the planning office, and make sure your customers are aware of this too.

    good luck

    Hi Gary

Nothing to do with your question but I was born in linthwaite ( think that’s the correct spelling) just outside Huddersfield. If you do go their and have the time & a camera I would love to see some Photos. We left in 1955 and I haven’t seen anything of the place since I was brought up at 123 mooreside view and near a hotel in Tommy Lane. As I said I know its a bit rude to ask But if you have the time and its no hassle I would love to see where i grew up. Thanks Mike 😳

    Hi
Thanks all for your comments. I shyed away from it when he asked if I could offer the service of getting planning permission. I think I will guide him down the architects route and keep my fingers crossed.

    Mike
Yeah if I am passing Linthwaite I will certainly take some pics and let you have them although there ain`t no Mooreside view no more.

    Cheers

We’ve done a couple of signs for the same client(2 different locations)
The cost of the actual applications was £130 a pop not including design and drawing time. And now i think the’ve to be re-applied for after 5 years!
Another revenue gathering excercise from the powers that be!!!
