Hi guys and thanks for looking in.

I have a new customer come to me for a quote on sign writing his new van. It’s a 61 plate long wheel base Renault master. I’ve had no dealings what so ever with chevrons and really could do with your advice on which direction to go and links to what is best suitable for a new to the trade sign writer. He attends motorway breakdowns and has told me he wants chevron strips at the bottom of both back doors. The brief was to supply good quality material but not the stupidly priced top end stuff but something that would work well.

I’m not trying to get into a debate about what he needs where as personally it does not sound enough to be compliant but I just want to supply a quote on what he asked for. Ideally I’d like them already made so I can just apply but happy to have advice and links to what you think would be most suitable for a newbie fitting and give him what he wants.

Thanks in advance for any help and pointers, I knew I couldn’t avoid them for ever but thought they were a lot less popular than they seem to be.

    Thanks

    Kev

William Smith sell kits for most vehicles using the ridiculously expensive stuff as your customer calls it.
Don’t know of anyone selling kits using a cheap alternative so you may need to buy in some red reflective on a roll & cut the strips yourself to stick on the yellow non reflective.

You should make sure you point out that his van should comply with chapter 8.

Kevin, we’ve used PVL quite a few times as we were in the same position as you some years ago. Just specify exactly what the vehicle will be used for. Using it on Motorways will need more than just the bottom of the doors doing.

Thanks for the pointers guys, I pretty much knew he would need a lot more than this on the van to be compliant, i will make sure the quote states it will not be compliant and put an alternative price to put all the correct stickers etc on, that way its clear which option he chooses. I’m sure he knows its not enough but I will make it very clear to him I’m following his directions not the legal guidelines and rules.

I’ve not used William Smith before but heard them mentioned a lot of times so maybe its time to get an account opened with them for occasions like this.

Thanks everyone, any more advice then please feel free to keep it coming, I’m away for the weekend at the moment so connection is very iffy.

Just tried the link in members forum for William Smith and only the credit account link is working not the norma cash account.

I remember something previous about this and cant find it now but I’m sure we had to contact someone about getting the right type of account with them to get the members discount, can anyone refresh my memory of what the application procedure is to get the board discount.

    cheers

I phoned them & spoke with Gill Harrison who is a member on the forum Kevin, she was very helpful so would suggest you do the same.

Kevin, half the problem is that the police don’t seem to do anything if a vehicle doesn’t comply so maybe it’s not their jurisdiction but I would also point out to the customer that if his van were to be involved in an accident the insurance might not be valid.

Thanks for that Martin, your right no one cares till something goes wrong and when it does it will be a case of passing the buck down the line till someone takes the can for it and id rather that wasn’t me, will ensure I get a signed statement should the customer choose the non compliant version.

    Thanks
