• Acrylic sign problem

Sorry to trouble you lot again.

Pictured is a round acrylic sign that i’m currently trying to do. The black vinyl has been reverse cut and applied dry to the back of the acrylic so it will show correctly from the front. The problem I am facing is after squeegeeing the hell out of it I can’t get parts of the vinyl adhesive to adhere properly to the acrylic – it does in some places like between the D & R. I’ve tried doing it wet (rapid-tak) with the same results, drying it with a hairdryer – the lot. The vinyl is Aslan series. Is this an adheisive issue?

Would be grateful for any advice.

    Cheers

See what it looks like tomorrow. It may fix itself. As long as there aren’t any real bubbles in there it may right itself as vinyl does tend to shrink a tiny weeny bit during the first day after application.

    Honest. 🙂

Edit: By the way, you won’t often apply black in this way and see perfect results straight away. Reverse applying black to clear is a rather unforgiving method as any tiny blemish really shows up. I wouldn’t blame the adhesive just yet. If you have access to demos, look at the halo one I did. Exactly the same thing happens but rights itself after a while.

It looks like you’re not using enough rapid tac and/or enough pressure. If you use application fluid, both surfaces need to be soaking wet with the fluid puddling on the substrate.
If that doesn’t work, I would suggest either using a laminator to apply the vinyl dry or painting to to achieve a smooth even finish. Painting would be my preferred method because there’s no chance of air bubbles getting trapped.

No knowing but I’d guess that the Aslan adhesive is a water based one. It goes yucky & white if more than the slightest trace of fluid is left. Good news is that unless you’ve pushed the adhesive around it WILL return to normal.

A nice acrylic based adhesive works best – and you get super nice reverse applied results. eg. Mactac. Can even just use soapy water!

yep, this happened to me before….. but it was a water based adhesive and a few hours later it was fine. the fluid had turned it white but when it had dried it was perfect.

Thanks guys and gurl for all the info.

GOOD NEWS is that I’ve come down this am to find the it looks bloody perfect – not a single bubble or sign of silvering at all 😛

Just for info the vinyl has a modified acrylic adhesive and obviously takes a while to settle down.

    Cheers
