Acrylic flat cut lettering help please?
Posted by Richard Urquhart on June 22, 2007 at 6:33 pmHi all
I have messed up
I quoted a job with 10mm flat cut acrylic lettering 26 letters @300mm high
not a problem you would think !I need the letters in gold acrylic and as some of you may know you cant get gold in 10mm,(SO I FOUND OUT TODAY SILLY ME !! ) so we could glue 2 sheets together then cut them out. My question is this i can get it done this way and price is not a problem but has anyone done it this way?? Will the edges of the letters look OK ?? Will the letters last as long and look OK or shall i just blag it and use 5mm
PLEASE HELP Rich

Phone up tour customer and say that all of your suppliers are currently out of stock of 10mm, and do not see it coming into stock in the near future, would they be happy with an alternative?

Do you mean cunning??
Just thought you could say as per above, then suggest to customer for 2 x 5mm, never tried it though, so don’t know what it would be like.

could you not get a sample & try it…I’ve never done this before so couldn’t comment on the join
maybe a last resort would be to face 10 mm clear with gold vinyl…I have done this before with good results but the customer new that’s what they were getting

not sure how you could make a good bond with 2 sheets laminated together?
I would come clean with the customer, if it is for stand off letters nobody will really notice the thickness..

no problem . if they are cnc or laser cut they will be identical, lightly sand the two face that you will be sticking, use tensol 70 ( the part A and b one) brushed lightly onto the face of letter and press and align up the edges, use a bit or masking tape to hold in place and put a heavy weight onto them for 20 mins , they will never separate. We have had to do this loads of times when only needing small amounts that don’t warrant buying a full sheet, or a sheet that can’t be got. never had a problem.

Hi Ian thanks for the reply. I use a flat cut letter supplier and its him that told me he would bond the 2 together as you have said , could you say if the joint was visible ???
The more i think about it the more i think i can get away with 5mm but again the customer wanted a rounded edge to the letters and i think this can only be done using 10mmThanks rich

the sides of gold perspex is funny, it has a milky type side to it , you might notice it if your looking for it the the customer will never see it, if you are rounding over the edges you will need a very fine roundover bit for your router. do a 5mm roundover and this will mean that the bead from the corner finished at the joint giving a natural line anyway, i doubt you will be able to get as fine a roundover bit though!!. as you need an edge to run the bearing against. your supplier may be able to do it for you on the cnc if he takes enough time to set up.

I would be inclined to tell the customer but thats just me. I take it you can’t use molded letters for this job Rich.
I have heard of people bonding 2 5mm sheets together but have no idea what they used to bond them. -
You can bond 2 sheets of 5mm gold together and cut the letters out with no problems. It’s harder to cut the letters out and then bond them together.

as ian has said. it will work.. "not your concern, but supplier" you have to watch you cover ever bit of the perspex in the adhesive or that when you sandwich the glue you don’t get an air pocket.
i haven’t done this much but when doing a few logos in the past i have done it but i glued it "after" the letters where cut, then i glued.
if your putting a radius on the face it wont be as glossy as the face itself. so you will have a slightly different finish and colour on the radius part. -

Hi we do it all the time but i recommend bonding the sheets together before cutting, it can be tricky we completely flood the sheet with tricloramethane you must make sure there is no air trapped between the sheets otherwise after a while you get a ripple effect that doesn’t look good
to be honest they could have been molded you get the rounded edge and the depth that you require.

All sorted now customer has agreed that he wanted 5mm with no rounded edges
letters will be fitted friday so i will take some pics
happy days rich
