  • Accuracy problem while engraving

I have had a problem with my Suregrave 2516. For a while I have noticed the engraving not quite joining in the right position, I have got away with this for a while but it is now getting bad (see photo) I have changed the two bearings in the tool head as I would have thought this was the problem. But as you can see from the photo the problem is still there. Can anyone advise me what maybe the problem is without getting in an expensive engineer.

Lead screw tension would be the first thing I would look at Mike. Theres a plastic screw that sits on both the X & Y lead screws. Its like a red (well it is on our 2516i) nurled ring, give it a little tighten (quarter turn or so) and see how it helps. If it makes it worse back it off a bit the other way. Its not an exact science but you’ll soon get a feel for it. Also make sure the leadscrews are well lubricated too, silicon grease is pretty good.

When you do the lead screw tension there may be a little grub screw which locks the nurled ring in place – make sure you tighten it back up when you’re done.

Might also be the spindle liner – take the nose cone assembly off – drop a cutter in and nip it up. Get a hold of the cutter and see if there is any lateral movement, there should be little or no movement at all. If its loose then this wont help the issue.

Let me know if you dont get any further with the leadscrew adjustment.
