Doing my first job and have a Blue outline with a Gold inlay.

What I have been trying to do is make up as much as I can before I go to the application, ie laying the Gold on the Blue.

I found few problems doing the text but am struggling with the larger logos (gonna have to re-cut a few). I have been doing this on a flat surface. and havin a hard time with it 24″ by 12″ oval with lettering in the middle

My question is how would you more experienced guys an gals go about this leave as is weeded from the cutter, try to do as I am or is there another way. I’m going to try an do it on a vertical surface as I believe it would be easier.

Any help and opinions would be appreciated.

    Thanks Goop.

    Forbie…

    I wouldn’t do it. 😀

Laying up multiple colours causes headaches whilst fitting because of the air line that gets formed when spatulaing (is that a word?) over where the colours meet. That is to say where it goes from one thickness to two. We get a neater job by laying the colours down on the job, sign or van, one at a time.

    The only exceptions are:-

    1. Where the colours don’t overlap.
    2. When the customer is fitting the deals himself and he isn’t capable of lining up the separate colours. In this case we always go to great lengths to explain the problems to them, partly so that there are no comebacks and partly to impress on them that the charge for our highly trained fitters is worth the money.

Forbie I agree with John, I always tried to leave separate layers even for the novice to line up unless they really insisted.
Where are you in Scotland if I am any where near I’ll drop in to help. In Glasgow next couple of days.

    Cheers

    Goop,

If I was doing this…I would first use transparent application tape as we do 99% of the time.

Applying the oval form after weeding I would leave the weed border intact put on the application tape, mark the left or right vertical side with a stabilo and then the bottom horizontal I now have a marked 90 degree angle when applying to the substrate, i just measure a height from the bottom and one side and know I have it straight, at the same time I cut out a couple of squares at the top left and right side if the eclipse is about 60cm wide I make the squares about 2cm x 2cm and the same on the text, then place the squares over each other knowing its perfectly centred, and apply job done and I only had to mark 2 points on the vehicle or substrate which I normally do in the software before leaving to do the job…..use a little more vinyl but save loads of time and works well everytime 🙂

Like John I would do layer for layer when doing the job.

I think i only ever tried to do this once….and that was enough.
As someone else has said you’ll get nasty sections of air where both colours meet.
If you use clear tape as Henry said, that’ll do it or use alignment bars or registration marks to line it all up and thatll speed the process up.
You can even put the bottom layer on the van dry then use a slightly soapy solution or app fluid to “float” the top layer into position.
I’m working on a demo at the moment for speeding up your van applications and it’ll cover colour registrations as well.
Last week popped in to a commercial van dealer to fit a transit – and with the prepped kit, fitted the transit, 2 colour, in 55 mins.
I’ll probably have the demo sorted by next week and send it on to Rob.
    Cheers

Like the others have said I avoid doing this if I can help it, I find it is far better to do it all on site and with a bit of practice you will do it really quickly, hurry up with that demo Joe it sounds interesting.

Bit far away I’m afraid Dave thanks for the offer anyway.

I have decided that I will do the seperate colours on the job as on the face of it I wont save much time anyway just cause myself more grief.

Henry I made 2 L shaped registration marks either side of the oval with all colours involved and am using clear registration tape.

Seems like I was trying to run before I could walk.

Thanks for the Info, help and advice.

    Goop.
