  • A few Polystyrene jobs and other bits (an introduction)

Posted by Paul Minton on December 13, 2011 at 10:45 pm

    Hi there,
Thought it was time to introduce myself and share a few jobs which we have done over the years.
Sorry most of them are taken in the workshop and not in situ (most of them are put up by the set builders) so you’ll have to use your imagination as to how they would look like with a good bit of lighting.
    (All poly hot-wired by hand)
Any comments welcome…..(just be gentle, its my first time!!)

    Paul.

Very nice work, a few stunning pieces, and yes with some lighting, it would make these pop, well done

Welcome Buddy, you are an asset to the boards.
Do you move the work over the hotwire or the hotwire over the work?

    Thankyou
I move the work over the hotwire.
I cut the letter/shape out first, then stick it or pin it onto the poly and use the card as the guide.
I’ve attached another one I found just to show how a simple bit of poly with the right lighting can look very effective.

Fabulous. I’m amazed you’re able to cut all that detail out by hand. The edges look very straight and neat – you must have a very steady hand. Well done

some great work there mate, well done Paul!

i am in the process of setting up a hot-wire cutter at the moment for 2 customers for interior signage. i know setting up a hot wire is simple enough but which is best, simply setting up a hot wire or one with a controlled/varying temperature Gage?

thank you for taking the time to post your work…

Thanks for your kind comments everyone.

Harry- I’ll try and set up a video camera and post a demo when I next get a chance. Been meaning to become a youtube star for a while now!

Rob- Best to be able to vary the temperature. Depending on what thickness of poly you’ll be cutting (12mm-25mm-50mm) you’ll need a different temperature in the wire so you don’t undercut, i.e burn most of the poly away underneath.

    Cheers

    Paul..

What a great selection of work,
very nice and always nice to see another way signage can be made.

Last time I used a hot wire was at college back in the late seventies, great fun as I remember but a real knack to doing it well. You obviously have it well sussed 😀

    well done
