  • A cautionary tale….empty your drain bottle

Posted by David Rogers on June 24, 2009 at 8:36 am

Came in this morning to see over a litre of ink splattered all over the floor, walls, stand and the print room stinking with solvent.

    Hmmm…never done THIS before.

    Carts sucked dry…feed pipes too.

Twist off drain bottle and splash it around a bit for good measure – hands now stained black.

    Cause?

Well looks like I’d not emptied the drain bottle in a while – and it reached the level of the drain tube…can everybody say SYPHON…yup – gravity did it’s work & sucked it dry. Few minutes to sort by a quick refill & syringe to pull the ink through (can’t be bothered with the ‘prime’ function)…so that’s a few £’s wasted. 😳

I spied our bottle is nearing the top yesterday….

last time it overflowed onto the holder, but getting an overflowed bottle out u have to slightly tip it and 4 pipes sticking down the flicks the waste in all directions. I managed to spill and lucky we got laminate floor as the cleaner does lift it up fairly easy.

So I will possibly remember today to empty the bottle.

Wish this had happened to you last week Dave. My waste bottle overflowed last weekend, I wrecked a shirt, and my trousers, have to repaint the floor, and my walls have this lovely splattered pattern on them now 🙁

I was so flustered after cleaning up the mess, I went to put a new yellow bottle on the stand, and apparently I didn’t tighten the new bottle tight enough (not over tight though), and when I came in the next morning, it had leaked through the cartridges and I found it pooled on the floor 😕 😮 There goes this weeks profit..

would putting another pipe (thinner obviously) sticking out of the top prevent this from happening ??

    Not really.

The main problem came not so much from the drain bottle overflowing through normal use – but that when the fluid entering the bottle from the pump waste tube was IN the existing waste ink…thereby making a fairly effective syphon system. it just drained under gravity from all 4 carts…(About a litre down the tubes as I’d topped them up the day before)..overflowed past the top of the bottle and dripped all over the floor, walls, stand, cables…

An extra tube to another waste bottle would be handy so long as the pump waste pipe never enters the fluid.

If anything the heads got a very extended ‘powerful clean’ 🙄
