    Hi,

We have just started to implement 5S in an attempt to improve efficency, the units were in a right mess, which i belive is causing many other problems.

So I’m looking for as many tips as possible to help improve workflow, reduce waste and most of all improve profit! We are currently in the sorting process, trying to decide what is and what isnt needed for a job, you wont belive how much stuff just gathers with time!!!

Has anyone else done this yet and if so what advice can you offer.

    Cheers,
    Simon

Hey… I know what this is!
Went through this when I worked for ALCOA. It Comes from TPS – the Toyota Production System, they marketed this to Manufacturing as a means to improve Efficiency and profits.
5s is the approach to Reduce costs on production at the floor level…

    Sort
    Standardize
    Simplify
    Sweep & Clean
    Sustain
I may be off with one or two though…
But It’s kinda like a “be real productive and organized” for dummies.
Most of the principles make sense….
As for me, I’m an organization freak, so I liked this line of thinking.

So to answer the question… I implement:
-A place for everything and everything in its place.
If you can’t find it, you can’t use it.
    -Reduce conveyance.
Store things where you need them… less movement
    -Reduce inventory
Keep what you need. I get most all of my materials in a day… I don’t
    stock much.
    – Use viuals for reference (marker boards… manuals.. charts)
The less you have to remember, the more you can

Sorry for the rant…. time for bed..

5s or 5c, Genba Kanri, Six Sigma are great principles if you have the time and resources. Most of it is common sense but on the various courses Ive been on there were some handy tips.

The use of flow charts to plot the process or draw up a foot diagram showing all of the movements helps identify issues at the sort and clear out stage.
Where possible a work station for each process on which would be: Visual displays for setting standards, quality checks ect ; Works orders and Job bags with proofs, colour swatch, specifications ; Visual work instructions for operating the machine, h&s and maintenance. All part of standardization.
Outline boards with an outline for all necessary tools and cleaning equipment. Sort & shine.
The difficult part is the Shitsuke (sustain) maintaining the changes.

http://www.visioninprint.co.uk has some articles on lean manufacturing and best practices in the UK print industry for a basic outline of 5s have a look at the demo on http://www.virtualcollege.co.uk/product … les/5s.asp
