40 amp blade fuses
without having anything to test one with is there anything obvious to see, that would suggest it’s blown or not ??

can you not see the fuse inside it?, through the top or side

It looks like this Ian….
should there be a bit of wire joining the two lumps of solder?……there doesn’t apear to be anything there[/img]

that s shape in the middle should be complete, without a break, take out another fuse to compare it with, If blown it should be easy to see

this one is the 40 amp maxi fuse Ian so the S shape in the middle is actually a bit less than half a mil metal rather than wire……..
would that really break?I thought the two lumps of solder would have carried a fuse wire??

yes it will break.
is this out of the car ?

The hole in the "S" is the weak point and the fuse should fail there. Just hold it up to the light and it should be plain to see. If you cant see the "S" shape, then your next thing to look for is Halfords :lol1: or any other auto-factor………..

Yes Chris……this is out of the car…..the fan has gone off but I was doubtful whether the fuse had gone
looks like it might be the motor then cos the s is still intact….I was hoping the two bits of solder might have held a wire which had blown but it doesn’t sound like it

With a 40Amp fuse at a guess I would think it goes through a relay or a controller of some sort.

to be honest Tim, when we first got the car a couple of years ago we had a similar problem…..It was under warranty so it went into Saab and now you mention it I think they might have said it was something to do with the relays

Had a quick Google, Glenn looks like there is a speed controller behind the glove box when you remove it. Seems like if it’s a fan then its a few hrs accessing through the engine bay. I would double check the fuse and any obvious wiring. If you can find this controller behind the glove box then check and clean any connections.
Just a quick Google seems to show the fans have problems.

Glenn one ref site mentioned 2 fuses one large 40 Amp No 23 and also No 4. I assume one is for the fan load and one for the controller. Maybe worth seeing if you have another fuse gone.

I’ve just been looking on a Saab forum myself and it does seem like it’s a problem…..I’ll check the other fuses tomorrow in daylight

Get onto the SAAB forums, might be a simple fix like replace motor brushes, then again new fan. Look up GSF autofactors for after market and genuine parts……….

You sure you got the right fuse? A fan wouldn’t need forty amps.

It said in the manual that the 40 amp maxi fuse was for the cabin fan…there was another option for the cabin heaters but that fuse was ok as well

40 Amps probably because of surge inrush on the startup of the fan.
Glenn have you had the glove box out yet to see if you can find the controller?

Tim I wouldn’t have a clue where to start 😳
I’m hopeless when it comes to things like that but luckily the brother in law is a mechanic and he’s having a look tomorrow
