• 3mm perspex needed

Posted by Lorraine Buchan on January 6, 2003 at 8:56 pm

    Hey everyone,

I was wondering if any one had a off cut or a piece of 3mm perspex lying around that they could sell to me.

Its a fairly small bit and i don’t use perspex at all so i didn’t want to go through the hassel of finding a supplier to sell me some. ALso i need it ASAP.

It needs to be 3mm white and will be back lit (no idea about the opacity requiered – anything will do)

    Size 410mm x 985mm

    Many thanks in advance

    Hi Lorraine,

Haven’t actually got any here but you can get small orders, cut to size from Abplas in Merton.

Lorraine, re the perspex you require you will struggle to successfully backlight white perspex- you need ref. No. 050 OPAL perspex this is made for backlighting in lightboxes i would suggest 5mm thick also we really must start an offcut trading section of the site Rob was going to start it when he got a minute

Thanks steve the opacity thing is something i know nothing about as i don’t use perspex. but know i needn’t feel silly when calling up tomorrow for it.

It needs to be 3mm as it is to replace the existing one and 5mm wouldn’t fit the frame. Apparently its goes at the top of a drinks cabinet or something so will be indoors in a cafe

yep your dead right steve.. sorry mate but im honestly under pressure over the next few weeks.. with work, the group and the website. time is not on my side… 😉
however i do think its a great idea.. i know there must be lots of us with spare offcuts that never get used that can be sold.
this section buy-sell-swap could easily handle it.
why not everyone try it for a bit. dig into the backs of your work place take down some sizes of offcuts or anything else you may have laying around and put the details here. it maybe worth it, who knows who will see it… a bit like the first “online car boot sale” 😆 😆
    maybe a long shot….but it may also work… 🙄

    Ok

I contacted the people in merton that Peter suggested and they gave me a price of £30.40+ vat for the pannel. The company is only down the road from where i live so i will go and collect.

Can any one tell me if this is a good price or not as to me it seems a little expensive compared to the cost of forex

    Hi lorraine
you are paying over the top but you are being charged a premium for cut to size I recently bought a sheet of 3mm Blue 2030mm x 1520mm and paid £39.49
for the sheet The supplier will cut to size and deliver but then you will end up with off cuts that you may never use

well then theres always Robs car boot sale.

If you get stuck let me know ill have a bit that size
our shop’s not far away in South Harrow.

Hi Lorraine, you cant really compare the prices of foamex and acrylic as they are completly different materials, but as Niel says at £30 plus vat you are paying over the odds.

    Hi Lor

I am the NI agents for Perspex, and a piece your size would cost you £8.85 + vat.

That will give you an idea of what you should be paying, unfortunately shipping from NI to you would cost £15, which makes it rather expensive.
