3M signage to a plane
Got this in my inbox today, and thought it was worth sharing ;
Qantas, an Official Partner of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games has taken its support to the skies. In a special ceremony on 31 May, Qantas unveiled one of its 737-800 aircraft emblazoned with the Commonwealth Games logo and colours.
It took five signwriters and four painters (including two first year apprentice’s) three days to apply the ribbons and logos. The ribbons were marked out on the aircraft by the signwriters and were closely followed by the painters with their two pack polyurethane paint. While the painters were painting the ribbons, the signwriters who are authorised applicators of 3M Aircraft Exterior Markings Film, were applying the decals which included the Logo, Melbourne 2006, XVIII Commonwealth Games, Australian flag, aircraft registration, Karak (the official mascot) and the Boeing 737-800 onto the aircraft. It was a great team effort between the two trades who often work closely together on these types of tasks.
Leading up to the special livery it took three days to print and prepare the decals. Qantas’ signwriters, who have a brand new Gerber Maxx purchased through Spandex Asia Pacific and driven by the Omega software, produced the decals on approved 3M VS7704 Aircraft Film. Team members had a lot of fun during this process and are extremely proud of their finished product.
The team consisted of signwriters: Cameron Pleydell, Kevin Borgelt ,Grant Capewell, Kate Curtis. painters: Robert Borg, Joe Ventra, Stephan Wojeidka. Apprentice signwriter Daniel O’Reilly and apprentice painter Eugene Portlen.
