£3k DELL XPS SYSTEM + 2 of 24" MONITORS – 10 MTHS OLD
Posted by Craig Smith on April 10, 2008 at 6:10 pmI have made the choice of changing over to Mac’s. (-) And obviously need to sell my recently purchase Dell monster….It was the best system you could buy in May ’07. Here’s the spec of the base unit;
PROCESSOR
Intel® Core™2 Extreme QX6700 (8MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1066 FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM
Genuine Windows® Vista Home Edition Edition with re-installation CD
MEMORY
4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz – 4 DIMMs
HARD DRIVE
320GB Performance RAID 0 (2 x 160GB SATA 3Gb/s 10,000 RPM HDDs)
500GB S-ATA INSTALLED FOR STORAGE AS WELL 🙂
OPTICAL DRIVE
Dual Drives: 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 16x DVD+/-RW w/ dbl layer write capable
VIDEO CARD
768MB nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX
SOUND CARD
Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ XtremeMusic (D) Sound CardIt’s all in the XPS case, which is a full aluminium LED setup. Simply stunning!
The monitors are both Dell 24" Ultrasharp 2407WFP.
I got this from a Dell Re-Seller (Ordered straight from Dell but with a discount!) and it cost me £3k. It retailed at £3.5 – £3.6 !!
I’m after £2k. It is the most awesome PC you will use.

Good choice converting to Macs, what software are you going to run?
-
Adobe CS3 still – they do a cross grade – if you have the receipt – which i don’t !?!?!? but they are reviewing the photo’s and scan’s etc….so we’ll see.
Be nice to see the Dell go to a good home though. I can honestly say out of around 20 pc’s i’ve had it has been the most stable machine ever. Never been formatted to date. And i normally have to do it once every 3-4 months!! -
Shouldn’t have any problems with the Mac, still using my 9500 daily (bought in 1996) as well as a range of powerbooks and macbooks, we use CS3 extensively, never felt the need to use any sign software.

have you rang adobe… ? I would have thought they would surrender the license on the existing machine
btw .. we are pure PC shop here, never go to mac… never! (except their monitors which are ace) -
Yes Dave, i was on the phone twice. You have to surrender a letter of destruction for your existing software, and they’ll then agree to send you a "mac" version in my case for cost of P+P. You can only do it once in a lifetime though apparently…!
What do you think of the XPS’s Dave….don’t you delve into pc’s alot?? -

I never had to do it since windows 3.xPeter

I hate a slow pc. And after a while they are so slow, it has to be done. I think of it as having a good clean up 😛
-
Mine isnt slow, but depends on how much data you want to process.
what sort of work are you doing that demands such a high end machine, and why do you think a mac will do it better-quicker?Looks like you are selling a Ferrari and buying a JCB 😀

Hmm,
I run twin geforces in sli and have twin 500 gb hd/s all run on a intel 2quad q660@240
in fact everything is dual.It didn’t cost 2k and I had it hand built when bought it 5 months ago.
Good luck with your sale but I think it’s overpriced. Sorry.

I have built machines myself numerous times, and as all pc’s are usually hand built, there all much of a muchness i think. Thede machines are similar to an Apple G5 is it? That big great hulk of a box? As in they are all laid out nicely, no cables trailing and it’s all built to the best logical layout possible. The system with the two monitors was £2989.00 The monitors were close to £800 on their own!! And the base was £2200 or as good as, and as we all know, components drop like hell anyway! The processor was over £800 when i ordered the system…like i sai, it was the best one available….and you pay for that privilege usually.
Peter, if it doesn’t sell then i will keep it. And yes, i kind of agree that my £1k mac will prob not be so speedy when (if) i get CS3 on it!!
Cheers, Craig

I wouldn’t be so sure on the speed front when it comes to Macs don’t bother comparing the speed of the processor between a Mac and a PC the whole architecture is different giving you completely different results especially with products such as adobe which were specifically designed for these machines.

If windows Vista Business is anything to go by, then it is a much better experience on a mac….not as good as OSX though, once your used to the shortcuts 🙂
-
Yes, I agree that architecture is different and speed feels different, however I cant comment on recent Macs, I left at OS9.2 lol and Corel 10 only works on Mac and not the latest.
I do like what Apple have done over the years, John Wilson showed me the Apple store in Glasgow, its amazing.
However as PC man, your spec is amazing above, I just bought a load of Vostro’s Quad Core and they are fast but Corel X3 isn’t written to spread the processing power so doesn’t take full advantage sadly. However I did open a 40 page catalogue in Indesign CS3 yesterday and could edit very easily and last time I did that was a year ago with an Pentium D and Indesign CS2 which was painful. Although I suspect the new Mac’s will fly.

I’ve been a Mac user since 1988. with an 8inch wide screen Mac Plus. with 1MB Ram and running DTP software like Aldus Pagemaker, Letraset ready set go, Superpaint, Illustrator 88 etc. Since then I have had lots of different Macs and they get better and better all the time. Now I’m using a MacPro 2GHZ 2 x Dual-core Intel Xeon Processors. This is an entry level MacPro computer line. Running on both MacOS 10.5 leopard and Windows XP professional, with Parallel desktop I’m running both systems on one machine dragging files back and forth from PC and Mac without having to reboot. It is amazing. No use for a separate PC for the Wasatch softrip. I have 3 PCS and I have to keep updating virus software.
I also think switching to Mac is a good choice.
Andre
-
Hi Andre, we were looking at parallel so that we could run our versacamm through our Mac, is it as good as it says on the tin? any issues or is it that straightforward??
Jason
-
I have used Boot Camp to partition the drive, and so have to do the reboot thing. I only went for a 20" 2.4Ghz Mac, so unsure as to how good it would be in parallel. Sounds good being able to swap the files to and fro though. Oh and Adobe have said No to crossgrade…..due to not having the receipt (I lost it during a house move 🙁 )
-
Hi Jason, Parallel Desktop is like a dream come true.
Andre
-
Mark, why should they say no, did you not have to register it online when you installed it, bring back macromedia at least they had the good sense to supply both Mac and PC versions in the same box.
Is it worth selling, I assume you have the original disks and box, it would be a bargain for somebody.

I’m impressed Andre, that would certainly free up some space and time transferring files etc, already checked out the apple website, I can feel a purchase coming on.

Jason -
so why is mac so good that it needs to run windows?
why not just have a pc in the first place?
Excuse my ignorance, never had a mac, so not really able to compare, but you never hear of a pc owner that needs to run a mac os as well as windows
Peter
-
Peter some software isn’t written for Mac Os i.e. Versaworks. They could build another PC running windows but then you have to copy over the file over the network.
This is being copied from the same hard disk to the same hard disk so its going to be tones quicker.
-
Peter this is a long debate. It is the Graphic Art and Prepress Industry thatConsiders Macintosh Platform as the number one Creative tool since the birth of postscript language and desktop publishing in 1985. If tomorrow they change to PC I will have no choice but to Join this Industry.
Many still have their opinions on which one is better. Check this out and keep reading the comments below

Hi Andre, you’ve got a few applications running on your mac there, which machine are you using, did you go for the twin processor or opt out for the single???
Jason
-
Well this is all just maturing out now, but it is possible to merge servers to together for multiprocessing… http://www.infoworld.com/slideshow/2008 … ogy-2.html
To easily understand this, each ‘blade’ is a full PC.
‘I feel the need for speed’ 😀
-
Jason, sorry for not being able to reply earlier, server problem.
I’ve Got a Quad Core MacPro 2.0GHz w 2 x Intel Xeon processors
4GB ram (8 slots upgradable 32GB) 2x250GB Hard drive. I have also added one new 20 inch iMac with single Dual Core 2.0ghz processor 2GB ram and 250GB HD and though the MacPro is much faster, you don’t really feel the speed different unless on heavy 500GB+ files. When compared to the 3.6ghz Dual core HP Compaq next to it, though its has a slower processor the iMac is lots faster. Maybe because of the new MacOs 10.5 Leopard operating system. I intend add a faster 24 inch iMac with parallel desktop to replace both the HP and IBM Lenovo, ThinkCentre 3.0ghz.If you want faster Mac there are MacPro 8 core xeon processor that should be at least 2-3times faster.
cheers

Just the PC left now, i sold the 2 monitors on an auctionsite and i lost £15 over 10 months 😀
Didn’t realise how long i’ve owned this – Since May!
Price for base, which is still covered in it’s film as supplied from Dell 🙂
£1k……
Also Adobe CS3 Design Premium, Transfer of ownership filled out etc….
Offers, As Adobe won’t crossgrade me. So i won’t be buying the Mac version obviously !!
-
marketdrayton, you might want to check out what DELL are selling & delivering your PC for now (with a year onsite warranty).
I’ve just spec’d up a machine the same as yours (less the 500Gb SATA & ‘just’ a 512Mb G/Card)…shocking how much PC’s can drop in a year…worse depreciation than a car!
Dave
-
Mark, why don’t ou keep the PC as a backup and buy an imac, always handy to have a PC (I’ll wash my mouth out with soap abd water later) knocking about.
Regards
Jason
-
Agreed Mark, I have discovered that it is always handy to have a PC. Some client bring in Jobs done on PCs and I always open their job on a PC to check if the files have been save properly, fonts missing etc… On the other hand if you keep the PC you might loose some hard earning income, as David says PC prices are coming down so fast. I have a PowerPC 8100av bought in 1994. I refused to sell it, I took it home and next time I look for it my wife was using it as a door stopper.
-
Erm, No I haven’t checked the Dell site…..and probably should do, but can’t bear to face it.
I was offered a £1000 by a chap who came and looked at it, but went away prior to making the offer and then never came back to pay!!
He prob checked Dell out as well…..
I will keep it, as he monitors have virtually paid for the Imac, and as for Parallel, it seems great but haven’t had chance to play with it much yet, just set it up…Anyone want the Adobe / Offer me on it!!!!
-
