3D Printing built-up illuminated letters
I remember when 3D printing was just a buzz-word and the subject of them being capable of printing a 3D was discussed on UKSB some years ago. I know pretty much everything from boats, bikes and even houses can be 3D printed in concrete.
As the machines get faster and the print material options get stronger, coloured, and finer detailed, it is only a matter of time before complete 3D Printed Signs become the norm.I remember one of the winners at the 2019 ISA-UK sign awards (Signs Express) had 3D printed Bull which was used on several signs they did for an English Pub, and won their category.
Don’t get me wrong, I know that there is a list of Pro’s and Cons of manufacturing using this method and I for one, much prefer the traditional highly skilled fabrication method. but still, it is interesting to see how our industry is evolving.

Yes I’ve been doing something similar for a few years now. I think this system has many advantages and has a great future. It’s much less labour intensive than the traditional methods used

Yes you’re right Karen. The first two examples (CBC and Rightsigns) only feature flat cut (CNC) lettering/shapes on stand off locators backlit with LED’s. All the others however have 3D printed shells topped with flat cut lettering with LEDS fitted inside the shells to provide the halo effect.

I think you have the edge over most though, Phill.
you single-handed design and build your own CNC Router, you then use the built CNC Router to make signs with it. You now 3D print signs and combine the printed elements with routered elements to make a sign, to sell to your customers. 🤨Ever thought about building an Ark to save us from the rising sea levels due to global warming? 🤔🤣🤣

Yes she works for Laings the Jewellers using 3d CAD to do the bespoke designs. As you know, it was her that introduced me to 3D CAD and it’s potential for use in signmaking
