Replacing encoder strip – Roland SP300

I think it’s time to replace my encoder strip as i’m getting the same problems from not too long ago again so rather than cleaning the strip i think it’s time to replace it

Does anyone know if it’s worth a bash on my own? how much is the encoder strip? or am I better getting an engineer to do it since the machine is well over due a service?

Is Ken McKnight still doing services or do I need to source a new engineer in the Glasgow area?

It’s a doddle mate, just be careful not to crease it. For the sp540 the encoder strip cost approx 180 +VAt from memory. However, if you haven’t already done so just turn it upside down. We did that almost 3 years ago now and have had no problems at all.

It’ll be good for a few years John I’m sure.

2 screws is all I remember do it and a steady hand when putting it back in.

There is a linear encoder setup in the service menu that you should do after fitting a new encoder i would imagine you should do it after turning it around as well but maybe not.

Do i need to put it into any mode when taking the strip out? i notice that it’s the full length of the machine so could be a little tricky?

You should do it in service mode.

It can’t be turned upside down, it won’t fit back in then 😕

Maybe the newer strips have the right holes in it 👿

Anyway while it was out i gave it a major clean, stuck it back in and it seems to be printing fine for now so fingers crossed

You don’t need the hole …. It’s just a locating hole, if you tighten the clamp enough it holds fine mate

It looks like it’s the encoder i have just had the same problem.

Try giving it a wipe gently with a wet cloth.

If the worst come to the worst you can turn it upside down and it will work.

Yep, I’d say encoder strip too. Print it again and look at the encoder strip in line with the fault on the print and you’ll probably find there’s some crap stuck to it. Clean it with IPA and NOT head cleaning solution or all the markers will come off. And turning it upside down definitely works. Much like turning your underpants inside out 😮 (apparently)
