Zund Cutting Table
Posted by Jason Xuereb on 29 July 2009 at 07:48Hey guys,
Just wanted to know if anyone had a Zund cutting table and what you thought of it? We are looking at purchasing one to speed our our finishing department and we like the speed and versatility of the machine.
Any input appreciated.

Hi mate, Ive used one extensively and they are an amazing bit of gear. Pretty costly, but well engineered and fairly low maintenance bit of equipment once it’s up and running.
It IS the kind of equipment that you have someone well trained before using it as it can cost a few bucks if someone accidently drills through the bed as they have to replace the bed itself but they also have to reset it with an extremely small tolerance to ensure its flat (kiss cutting etc), and that takes time….
Anyway, there were heaps of teething problems with ours, but once they were all sorted out, it is an amazing piece of equipment, for routing, trimming and contour cutting of various materials.Ours was used in conjunction with a high volume flatbed and we used it for trimming prints and routing alupanel etc. We found a single person could effectively switch between operating the 2 when things were not extremely busy, (night shifts etc) and still have a good hourly sq/m output.
In my experience, it is best to have one or two people to operate the machine as one person well trained in the machine will be far more effective than a handful of people half trained in using it.
Keep in mind that they are very messy and it will need to be separated from any printing equipment. Also, the routing samples you may receive from your supplier are likely done in a slow, high quality mode and any specs on cutting speed for the machine may need to be slowed if they are to be realistic at high quality modes. Also some materials may need multiple passes to cut through (routed 10mm pvc, aluminium etc)
Hope that helps mate, send me a PM if you have any specific questions and I may be able to give you a buzz and answer them if you like?
Cheers,
Pauly

Hey Pauly,
We won’t be using for any routing etc at the moment. Its more to convert roll based media and corrugated plastic and foam pvc. I don’t think mess will be a problem with the blades I saw I could use.
I am looking at getting the conveyor belt so going into the table bed should be a problem with the blades I will be using.
We did a test and it can basically reduce my finishing time by at least half and also increase the quality of our output.
I’m trying to address a major bottle neck in our finishing. Our printers have no problem keeping up with the work. Just finishing it seems to be the problem. It’s either the cutting table or another two plotters and hiring a staff member.
