  • Wrapping an MDF counter

I have to wrap an untreated mdf counter around 3 sides in mat black.
I generally use Hexis but also Mactac on occasion.
What would be the best vinyl and procedure, cost being a major factor.
Would either the Suptac S5000 or the more economical Ecotac E3000 stick OK?

I would seal it first with uni bond or such.

Sorry can’t be any more help than that.

    Tim.

    Hi peter

the hexis e3000 will work ok. i do a lot of jobs for a customer of mine that we cover MDF with it. he seals the MDF with MDF sealer and then flats it off lightly, the vinyl we wrap round the edges which on this job are covered with plastic trims so not seen.

    hope it helps

This has been asked before and the consensus was you can just cover MDF without sealing. I have flood coated MDF with sealer and without and both the same, used a little heat to bond it.

without a proper coat of sealer and silk to gloss finish you run a high risk of the vinyl loosing surface tension over time and basically looking like a pair of pants. 😕 not trying to be funny but went through this just 6 weeks ago with a local firm we do work along side. the project was for the BBC and they built the set out of MDF. told them same as i have above, didnt listen and went with it.
we then went to take pictures of the set for our own promotional purposes and it looked poor. once aired on TV it looked worse, though i never saw it personally.

we used Oracal Cast, 751 and i think 951 too as we were also trying to get colour matches for the set.

my advice is to properly treat the MDF or do not do it.

MDF can work, we sealed in the past to help.

Remember the surface will show through so try and make the artwork not of solid colours if printing.
