  • Wrapping a deep recess wheelarch – help! (pic included)

Posted by Chris Foster on 28 March 2012 at 19:40

I’m currently wrapping a Ford Focus ST that has has the RS kit fitted to it and having a couple of issues with the rear arches. All of the panels my customers has bought are genuine (bonnet, wings etc) but the arches are moulds that are tiger sealed onto the existing rear quarters. I’ve wrapped one arch / quarter but as the recess is REALLY deep(!) its coming away slightly in the recess all the way round the edge. I imagine its because of the stretch needed but I cannot think of any other way of doing it. The customer has seen it and is happy but i’m not 100% happy with it.

I’ve attached a pic of the below of the arch in question. How would you tackle this? Would you do it in 2 seperate pieces somehow? Vinyl im using is the 3M 1080 series matt black.

    Cheers
    Chris

i would do it in two sections, if its releasing already it is under too much stress already and will only get worse.
do have a pic of the actual reccess setup?

I was going to attempt the other side in 2 pieces and see how it came out, would you do the arch first then the quarter panel?

Will get a pic tomorrow when its out the garage, the more i look at it the more I dont like it!!

yeah, its not going to get better!! and if you dont like it, then thats the sign to change it! i would do the arch first then quarter panel so the join doesnt become a water trap (if that makes sense!)

Ah ok see what you mean, would you see the vinyl edge though it the arch goes on after? Wonder if I can salvage the existing quarter by trimming it down, the vinyl piece is right down to the A pillar, right PITA!!!

Yup, defo do it in two sections, trim the arch away and make sure you have a little overlap left from side panel to lift and rehearing back down, leave this loose for now, refit the arch then heat the overlap down then a nice clean join line using tessa tape as a guide. In my experience there won’t be a material on the market that stay put in that recess far too deep. Hope this helps! Feel free to give me a call if you need to, Jas

Thats brilliant thank you! I’ll give it a go tomrorow! With the other side I presume i’ll wrap the arch first then wrap the rear quarter after?!

What wrapping material are you using Chris?

Doesn’t seem too much of a recess, if one stretches over a longer draw area.

I do do not know that vehicle, but if it is a wheel arch on a panel, a separate arch to panel,it will always fail over time unless trimmed on the panel join. A plastic arch, or a diff thickness metal panel will contract and expand at diff rates to other panels.

Jason – great advice, did exactly what you said and it worked perfectly! I even managed to keep the rear quarter vinyl in tact but gently lifting, applying the arch vinyl the laying over the top on a neat edge. Customer was over the moon with it! Thanks again mate, actually feels like I’ve learnt something!! Quick pic below before he collected it, bumpers etc are all still loose (actually a very nice customer who made my life very easy taking bits off for me!!). Just needs to fit the wheel spacers and coilovers!!

Craig – used the 1080 series 3M vinyl! First time i’ve used it (always used hte 85 series) and its great to use, very easy and forgiving!

Mark – it is a very deep recess and the fact it goes around a fairly steep corner at the same time makes it nigh on impossible to get it to stick. Car is a 2007 Focus ST with a focus RS bodykit fitted (genuine panels). The arch extensions have been tiger sealed on so very doubt they are going to move! (only non-gen part as genuines are a complete rear quarter with the wider arch.

Thanks again all, R32 Golf next week so fingers crossed the recess isnt as sharp!!
