  • wrap BMW 5 in matt black

    Hi all,

God I haven’t been on here for months.

Ok, I got a BMW 5 series to wrap in matt black vinyl. I’m a one man band, with no one to help fit, what material do you recommend for fitting on my own.

I’ve used Hex-press digital before and was a dream to work with. But at the moment they don’t have any stock on matt black wide enough to the bonnet in one. I don’t want to do any joins if I can help it.

Hope someone can suggest a good material to use with bubble free tech.

    From Mark

3m 85 series comes in 1520. It does mark easily though. Oracal probably have one – if you can find someone who will sell you any.

    Thanks Jon.

Is that bubble free the 3m 85?

william smith do the oracol 970, but not the rapid air system.

Kris at Hexxis was saying they will have the 1520 vinyl out soon. and thats all rapid air, depends how long you want to wait really.

Yes, just wrapping an SL500 with some gloss white now. I notice that the air channels are slightly visible on the finish with this vinyl. Does anyone know if they become less visible after a time?

We’ve just wrapped recently a Range Rover Sport, RS500 and an Audi TT in the 3M. Got to say film was lovely to apply but as with all Matt films they do mark easily if your not careful.

I’ve just wrapped an Audi S4 Avant matt black using 3M stuff, I prefer using it to the Hexis vinyl (only used the Hexpress gloss white though). Although the Hexis was ok the 3M is easier I found.

Although Hexis Matt Black is probably the best representation of Matt Black as in it really does look like matt black paint finish it does mark easily and is quite prone to going shiny if stretched a lot, saying that a 5 series BMW shouldnt present too many problems with that, would say the 3M is nicer to work with as although it can mark it is a bit better than the Hexis in that regard, another consideration may be price as the Hexis is about 40% more expensive than the 3M.

3m does mark, but post heating usually gets rid of the marks. have you tried it?

Would agree it is not too difficult to get rid of marks with the 3M, the Hexis is different in that it has a very realistic matt finish (best way can describe it is as an almost chalky finish), so when it gets light scratching it can mark it permanently, although applying heat does reduce it to an extent.

Another thought is durability for the customer, the 3M definitely wins here as the Hexis can be marked very easily by any kind of scratching motion and it tends not to come out with cleaning/polishing.

    Hi Anthony
Just wanted to mention that we don’t sell Oracle we do the 3M 85 series at 1524mm and yes it’s bubblefree…..it’s got the controltac (repositionable) and CV3 (comply version 3) adhesive. The cv3 adhesive is tiny horizontal air channels which are so tight together they are practically undetectable but still aid fitting.
Peter is right any marks do come out with a gentle heat.

Hexis do a matt black like you describe and a satin black which is very similar to the 3M.

Slightly off topic but how are you advising your customers on keeping the matt black vinyl clean, obviously no car washes etc but are there any products out there that will keep it looking like new? I’ve wrapped my own car Matt Black and the damn thing stays dusty more than matt!!!!!

3M say to use glass cleaner on it. Swissvax do an expensive opaque wax. Thats about it I htink.

    Hi There,

RHG are the exclusive distributors of Oracal in the UK , we do keep matt black 1520mm wide on the shelf which has a repositionable adhesive, its a double layer cast , the top surface effectively being a matt clear overlaminate for protection.

    Hope that helps.
