working from home
hi just wondered what those of you that work from home do about the council and planning permission etc. Im curently considering this but looks costly, and premises elsewhere maybe the answer. or do you just keep quiet as its only a cutter and a computer in a garage? Obviously vans turning up to be sign written would give the game away! any advice appreciated, and finally do most public liability insurances cover you for injury to persons/vehicles whilst on your premises (ie collecting goods).

hi mate i run a icecream van bussiness from home and have just started signs tto i am registered with e health with vans from home councill licenced for area too ive never asked for permision
all u have to watch is noise neigbours could complain if u make a nuisance
parking etc u should register as a businees but its easier to keep quiet about it the only people who know are the ones around u so keep them happy and bobs your unkle -
I do all my sales/admin and design work at home from 9-5pm then I have a small depot worskshop whenever I have jobs to produce at a large unsightly garage about 10 miles away in the middle of no where!!!!. I have the workshop insured as thats where my cutter and pc along with vinyls etc is stored, but due to location its pennies compared to city centre location.
Keeps the costs way down and I would recomend it. -
Hi I am one of the lucky ones who runs two businesses out of my house….
Like tonite i am slightly fried. there are times you just cant get away from the work unless you are willing to just not answer the phones. There are also times when someone is there knocking on the door and basically your working again. But it really does cut the costs big time and it really is nice…. you dont have to be on the clock if you dont want to and no traffic issues. -
I work from home, I think the only time the council really care is when your business starts to affect your neighbours. Like doing vans or cars outside the door all the time, doesnt look great for them. But apart from that it should be fine.

I work from home too, started in a spare bedroom but outgrew it rapidly! Now in a converted garage only problem is a tin roof (its bloody hot)
Looked into premises when there was a chance of redundancy at my “other” job but the oveheads are horrendous and decided to stick it out at home.
No problem with the neigbours either and i get to name and number all the local kids football shirts!best rgds

We run 2 business from home, I have never applied for planning but I have had to pay commercial rates on my workshop which was 4 double garages this is about £400 for the year, on the plus side they reduced my house rates by £350 because the house is now classed as being next door to a commercial premmises!!!
I did have to pay over £1000 in back rates though.
