    Rob,

I didn’t know you had another vinyl artist in the family – This was in the sign mag I just got and I thought the name sounded familiar.
Does he do all the fitting of this himself ? I assume he uses slit down rolls of striping tape. It must make your eyes go a bit fuzzy after a few days of doing that !!

(For those who read this and don’t know, Robs brother Jim has fitted this amazing design in cut vinyl to the floor of the Tate gallery.)

    Impresive stuff anyway mate…

    Nigel

    Your quite right Nigel

was this in a recent sign mag?

Rob’s brother did this sometime ago. It was on a thread here awhile back.
    Clever stuff heh!

The Tate apparently wanted it for crowd control as people kept bumping into each other and getting lost in such a large building. So if you wanted the cubism gallery, for example, you simply followed the yellow line and so on.

Oh well, old news I guess then ๐Ÿ˜ณ

It was in the Dec issue of Signs,Screen & Digital printer mag, so I guess I could be forgiven for thinking it was a recent project !!

Not at all Nigel it was good to see it again
I don’t remember actually seeing this shot
and I didn’t remember it was in the Tate either!

I can impress my mates when I take them round the Tate.

    Hi Nigel
Yes your spot on mate. It is my brother.
The Tate piece is very new, so youโ€™re right thinking it new news.
It has been posted on the site before though, but! For a different location/gallery, different shape & style of floor.
Heโ€™s been very successful with his work, especially the floors. Similar floors have been laid around the world in various different galleries.
The vinyl is not pre-cut. Our company cuts it for him from solid logs. Various colours, widths and types of vinylโ€™s depending on the show. Getting pre-cut stuff would be great, but would mean the floors would appear much the same regarding widths & colours. Some floors are huge while others are much smaller. Some are monochrome while others fluorescent.
Basically when the galleries do a show combining many different artists. The show
Takes thousands of folk in over about a week.
The visitors then just look round or buy something. Over last couple of years I think he has sold around 30 floors maybe more. Floors are not just the only piece he does. Each one is as bizarre as the next, he has many.. The most recent one was giant eyelashes made from Perspex in various colours hanging from the roof.
Yes, you guessed it.. While at Art College he was a sign maker..
He was in Miami last week but is actually in Pittsburgh at the moment, then onto New York. If youโ€™re local Jill you could pop by and see for yourself. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Oh good, I feel less out of touch now ๐Ÿ˜€

Rob, just out of interest could you answer a few questions….

    1) How long does it take him to fit a floor like that ?

    2) Do you use a special removable vinyl ?

    3) Does is wear well enough with no lamination ? i.e. could you use plain vinyl for short term floor graphics in a shop for example

    4) Arn’t there health & safety aspects to putting a slippery film on the floor – I remember in the dim and distant past having a lot of trouble sourcing floor graphics, and this was one of the issues raised.

    Have a great Christmas,

    Nigel

i think a team of about 4-5 people lay it. takes about 4-5 days. i guess it depends on the area covered. ๐Ÿ™„

the vinyl used in the past was mactac 9800. these days it is all orarcal 751.

i think it wears very well. although i think that would be down to what its adhereing too. marble/wood/stone etc.
there is a permant floor laid in edinburghs modern art gallery. it has to last 20 years with thousands of folk walking on it daily. they bought four times the amount of vinyl needed so if any area came away. they could stick a fresh peice exactly the same shade/size in its place.

you could be right but like i said, there are many many floors sold around the world and many galleries having them on show. i dont think it would be much more slippy than that of marble or varnished wood if wet.
