Worcester council bosses have agreed to replace or at the very least repaint 400 street name plates across the city at a cost of £40,000. The plans were agreed at a meeting of Worcester City Council’s cabinet at the Guildhall yesterday as part of a drive to improve the city’s appearance as some of the signs are in especially poor condition. Although the council already renews damaged or missing signs when the need arises investment has been limited and officers have identified a number of areas where plates are missing or in poor condition.

Those street name plates which are identified as needing to be renewed or refurbished will be based on customer and councillor requests. Particular focus will go on street name plates in prominent locations which have a high heritage value or important for navigating the city. Street cleaning and refuse teams will also have an input. Cllr Andy Roberts, cabinet member for a clean, green and safe city, said the Friends of Brittania Square cleaned and painted their signs themselves last year which did a great deal for community cohesion.

Is this the worst sign in Britain?

He said the public could give their feedback by contacting their local ward councillor with suggestions. Cllr Lucy Hodgson seconded the proposal to invest in the new signs, describing it as an opportunity to repaint signs that were worn and replace those that had gone missing. She said: "The Sidbury sign looks very sorry. I would be delighted to see those signs being refurbished." Council leader Simon Geraghty described it as ‘a great community project to champion’ and said it was a measure of the council’s ambition to improve the quality of the environment.

Cllr Adrian Gregson, leader of Worcester’s labour group, said while he agreed with improving the signs there was an issue with the second £20,000. He said: "If we want the local community to get involved maybe we don’t need that extra £20,000." "I think there are so many pressing issues on the council at the moment to decide now to put forward £20,000 is a bit premature until you get your list together." But Cllr Geraghty said restoring and replacing the signs was a ‘a big job’ and added: "We don’t want to be skimping. There is a clear commitment that we get the job done."

Cllr Stephen Hodgson said he hoped the ‘unique signage’ of Warndon Villages which has colours depending on the area of the Villages would be maintained. He said: "We have got some that are the wrong colour and in the wrong font." Cllr Roger Berry suggested signs which had a unique heritage could perhaps be painted a a different colour with a possible explanation of how the street got its name.
