Hi all and a happy new year

Ive been doing some window tint for a customer of ours on VW t4 vans back window and I was recommended doing it in two halves, But I would like to do it in one…does any one know if there’s is any window tint on the the market that has any give, so that when you heat it up it stretches and stays not like the awkward non stretching stuff you buy from halfords? Help!! 🙄

    Thanks

    hi signman
unfortuneately its not just a case of the film being different there is a technique to heat shrinking rear windows with window tint.
any rear glass can be done in 1 piece if you know how to do it properly.

    regards

Hiya Signman, as Kevin said all back windows should be done in one piece if its done properly.

First you need a good qualitiy tint film (Suntek or Johnson) it will then need dry shrinking and then wet shrinking to finish, heigene/ clenliness is the key, ohh and a good bit of training and plenty of practice, rear windows are not the easiest to learn with.

    Good luck

    cheers

We’ve recently increased our services to offer window tinting to our customers and purchased a DVD which shows great techniques on how to apply the film – including one piece rear windows.

If you are interested PM me and I can put you in touch with the company.

with all due respect theres no substitute for hands on training. you can’t learn properly from a DVD.

Kevin, I agree, we went down to a tinting company in Gatwick and worked with their fitters for a week, covering all the basics and then spending a few days actually tinting.

Its only when you get back the workshop that you get down to it, setting things up and actually having a go, but we had some seriously good training first.

It makes me chuckle now when i see poor tint jobs!!

While I appreciate your point of view, these boards are full of signmakers who have never received any formal training, but through determination, hard work and advice from others have managed to build successful businesses for themselves.

    a good point john
but what you will find is the finish of window tinting is far more critical than that of vinyl. because there are already a lot of professional vehicle tinters already out there customers will demand a top notch job.
when we started tinting 12 years ago there was no standard to compare to, whereas now the customer knows what they can expect. i.e. 1 piece rear glass, no gaps at the top of windows, no dirt or contamination, etc.

my point was learn to do it properly first time hands on rather than simply from a dvd which will show you the basics but not assess you properly

Kevin again I agree, better to receive some help and advice “hands on”, we tried “doing it ourselves” to start with, to absolutely crap results.

Once we had worked with the tinters it was much easier, then we just needed to practice, it is important to achieve a very good finish, it is expected.

Another point to remember: “a bad reputation spreads faster than a good one” if you do a crap job the customer will tell every Tom Dick & Harry and goodness knows who they will tell!!

Do it properly and go on a course, the cost is soon recouped once you can acheive a good standard and you will enjoy doing it much more, I do, I get a lot of job satisfaction from a finished vehicle
