William Smith Signage improvement in Barnsley

Signage from William Smith helps pedestrians and motorists get straight to the point in Barnsley.
A major signage improvement scheme, designed to enable pedestrians and motorists to find their way in and around Barnsley town centre with greater ease, saw William Smith supply 29 Stylos fingerpost signs for the town centre and 51 traffic route signs for the primary routes into the town. The project was part funded by the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Barnsley Cultural Infrastructure Programme. “We had used William Smith in the past and like the Stylos product. It was, therefore, submitted to the Public Spaces Strategy Steering Group (made up from representatives from stakeholders, community groups and local residents ) who selected it from a range of products because it fits into both historic and contemporary backgrounds and environments,” explains Barnsley Council’s Group Leader – Traffic, Gary McNaught. “In addition, Stylos is a proven product and easy to change when required.”
Designed to point in up to eight different directions, Stylos fingerposts from William Smith can be supplied as complete units or in component form. A choice of styles and colourways ensures that Stylos fingerposts blend sympathetically with both urban and rural environments. A concealed internal fixing system, comprising an inner post into which the pre-drilled aluminium arms are slotted and secured into position, means that the fingers, which can be set either at one height or at different levels, cannot be twisted around once in situ. The arms are, therefore, robust and inaccessible to tampering, thereby reducing the incidence of vandalism.
The 51 traffic route signs were produced by William Smith using 3M Diamond Grade™ DG³ prismatic reflective material.
The Stylos units supplied by William Smith were silver (to a specific RAL specification) with black text. “Everyone, from retailers to Chamber of Commerce and Councillors, has commented on how stunning they look,” says Gary McNaught. “The new signage in and around Barnsley town centre is a small but very effective way of making the town centre experience even more of a popular leisure activity,” comments Dominic Beck, External Affairs Executive, Barnsley & Rotherham chamber of Commerce. “Retailers, shoppers and passers-by will have no excuse in not knowing their way around the town centre, from the arcade to the markets and the bus station to the town hall. This investment will underpin everything that the town centre team and support groups across the Barnsley partnership have been promoting, that of a diverse, niche and independent town centre offer for everyone.” “They look good and are fit for purpose. I’m impressed,” adds Mike Rossiter of Barnsley Street Pastors.
Cllr. Roy Miller, Cabinet spokesperson, Development, Environment and Culture (Operations) says: “These new signs are a very welcome addition to the town centre. Growing the town centre economy is one of the Council’s main ambitions and these will help visitors and residents alike to find their way to the town’s top attractions. We’ve also taken this opportunity to de-clutter the town centre and get rid of some of the old unnecessary signs. These high quality new signs are a lot more sympathetic to the environment, making the town centre a welcoming place to any visitor.” 3M Diamond Grade™ DG³ Reflective Sheeting achieves the highest performance of all prismatic products under the British Standard for Microprismatic Sheeting BS 8404:2005. Guaranteed to maintain a high level of luminance for 12 years, DG³ not only offers excellent performance, but also provides a reliable, long-term safety investment as increased visibility of traffic signs from all viewing distances can contribute to reduction in speed and accidents.

“We have worked on projects with William Smith for many years,” continues Gary McNaught. “This was a big package, started in October 2012 for completion by 23rd May this year and the turnround time for William Smith to deliver all the signage was incredibly tight—around four weeks from acceptance of order to final delivery.”
William Smith regularly undertakes work to enable customers to meet deadlines, manage volume projects or meet specialist signage requirements. “Our major strength is the facility and expertise to manage projects of all sizes from simple one-off signs to large signing programmes requiring multiple signs in a variety of sizes, and bespoke signage packages from design through to build,” says William Smith’s Marketing Manager, Chris Bradley. “Our highly skilled and flexible workforce means that finished sign products can be supplied with some of the shortest lead times in the industry, with no compromise on quality.”
