  • Wide Format Printer – Printhead height adjustment???

Posted by antevo on 1 September 2003 at 08:33

I need a wide format printer that can print on 4mm substrate, however I don’t fancy shelling out for an Encad Novajet or the like.

I am sure a year or so ago, I heard or read at a fleeting glance somewhere that it is possible to modify a “cheaper” wide format printer, pehaps with washers, to move the heads to a higher level, but I am also sure that there are only a few printers that you can do it with.

Does anyone have any experience in this??

PS – I don’t care about the fact that the printer will only be able to print at that level for all jobs, as I intend to use it for only one application.

    Any help apprecieted.

    Thanks

PS, very good and informative board!

There is a Co that modifies the Roland machines to print up to 12mm thick stuff – the mod is about GBP 10 000 as afar as I know , I dont know the exact name of the co.
I would get a dedicated flatjet to do this – however they are VERY expensive right now.Roland has a protoype printer that will print anything up to 7.5″ high and print on curved stuff too but that prolly wont come on stream for a while.
What exactly are you prinitng , it might be worthwhile to print dye sub inks and heat press on whatever.

    Rodney,

    Thanks for the reply,

I am only looking to print directly onto 4mm Correx or Foamboard.

I only need small numbers runs at a time.

(can’t say what for at the moment, as I have read some of the members posts from the past 😆 )

The other option is to use a vinyl cutter/printer.

But it would make much more sense for me to buy a cheap wide format (only needs to be 36″, infact I could get away with 24″), the modify it to raise the print heads, surely I cannot be that difficult.

Like for example, if I use a printer that can print upto 1.5mm, and I raise it to 3.5mm, then I would still have 1.5mm to play with – In case i cannot get the right size washers.

Just seems to make sense to me ….. or am i missing something here???

I suppose it depends – not all inkjets will print on all substrates , it would have to be a solvent printer of some sort as correx wont accept normal inkjet stuff – we would all LOVE a cheap inkjet that can print onto rigid.
Mostly its not a head height thing , its getting the media tween the rollers and having it advance properly in relation to the head – and it would have to be a machine that has a straight feed thru.
I would screen the correx as the cheapest option

OK, let me expalin a little further….

As well as a tshirt embroidery and printing business, I also own a small Estate Agency 😮 😳

I am looking to print onto 4mm correx or foamex for estate agency boards, but not just a normal board, I want to Individualise each and every board, certainly with the main features of the property and perhaps even an internal image, the lifespan of each board can be as little as 1 week, as the rather that putting a SOLD slip over the board, I would re-print a new one saying “Under Offer in 3 days” etc, i think you get my drift.

The easiest way I can see to do this is to use an injet with GO inks, and then use a printer that can do the straight feed, but with the height adjustment made.

As I said at the beginning of the thread, I did read about a year a go that this was possible, by modifying some printers.

    Am I totally mad?????
