  • why wont my summa D120 work when turned on?

Posted by Stephanie Peterson on 22 January 2008 at 18:16

Okay I have been cutting just normal A9 Avery vinyl on the D120 plotter all morning and all of a sudden nothing. There are no error messages or anything it just won’t cut.

The only setting I have changed thus far have been the pressure and speed. I even went through and double checked to make sure no other settings were changed and I could find none.

So then I thought it could be that I wire got unplugged or something so I double checked to make sure. They are all plugged in but still nothing will cut. I am totally lost and have no idea what could be the problem.

Any suggestions or advise is very welcome at this point. Thanks. Oh yeah and I am using signlab 7.1.

:lol1: Yeah I’m sure he is.

Yeah when I turn on the plotter it makes all the usual sounds and turns on just like it normally would. That is why I’m so confused.

Does the ‘TEST CUT’ function still work?

What about moving the head / vinyl with the arrow keys?

Using the serial or the USB?

Does Signlab still communicate with the plotter – can it read back a sheet width?

The test cut function works, as does moving the head/vinyl with the arrow keys.

    We are using the USB.

Signlab works fine up until I hit the final little cut icon to cut it. Normally it would then pop up and read:

    Cutting:

    Cutting to: External DLL
    Bytes Sent: 123131 or whatever

Well when I do it, the bytes sent just stays at zero and freezes the program. I hope that makes sense.

I have turned the plotter back on and then off again. But none of the rest of the equipment/computer has been. I plan on trying that but I can’t just yet as I have a large print going that only needs another half hour or so. If it wasn’t for that I would have tried rebooting it all.

Seems like the plotter is OK.

Problem lies with Signlab / PC from what you said.

Do the reboot as suggested – failing that, you might need to reinstall Signlab (20mins) if it has become corrupted.

    dont reinstall signlab, just yet.

have you looked in the plotter set up in signlab? (cut plotting defaults)work through the plotting defaults then set up, check you have your plotter selected then click on the ports tab, it should show external dll
For some reason signlab occasionally forgets where the plotter is.
if all is good there I would uninstall the plotter driver then reinstall, run through the settings in signlab then try again,

Okay its all fixed now. When I checked to make sure it was set to external dll it was so I knew that was fine.

Luckily when I came back from my lunch though my print had finished so I shut everything down for five minutes or so and booted it back up again. Now it is all working fine again. I just don’t understand why it stopped in the first place as I had been cutting lots of vinyl without a single problem up until that point. Oh well, thanks everyone for your suggestions on how to solve the problem it was very helpful.
