  • why is my graphtec plotter not cutting smooth ovals?

Posted by John Wilson on 29 March 2006 at 17:55

I have a graphtec 3000-60, when I’m cutting ovals it’s not cutting straight lines…. if that makes sense.

It looks like a wavy line, is this normal?

From a foot away it looks oval but very close up it’s not 😕

    John
what software are you using some have adjustments for curve cutting, only got design version on the laptop so can’t check the correct terminology but hopefully you get the meaning. Also some cutters have a similar system, in the firmware adjustable via the control panel on the cutter.

    Hi John,

I could do with a few more details to pin point the problem here. If you’re in a rush maybe best if you gave us a call.

If the oval has been imported, It may have buch of un-necessary nodes on it. If that is the case just clean it up. You need only 4 nodes to define any oval.

If it is a file problem, and you have hard time fixing it, just e-mail it to me and I will take care of it for you.

Cheers for the offer Misko, but it’s not a file problem…. I took it to my mate to cut and it was fine. I told him that it wasn’t cutting right on mine and he told me he had the same problem ages ago and it was down to plotter settings.

It’s not cutting in a straight line when cutting the oval, i’ll post pics on monday with what I mean

Can the program you are using plot to a File?
If it can, plot to a file called c:\test.plt
Make sure it has a ".PLT" extension.
Im sure the program you are using can import HPGL PLT files.
Import it and see if its as wobbely on screen.
If its fine on screen, its something up more than likely on the plotter.

    Hi John,

Just a few questions get your pen ready, 🙂

    What software are you using?

Are all other shapes/ text ok?

Is there any play in the head assembly?

Is the blade holder in good condition no play in the blade?

    Cheers

I finally found the problem, seems that there was play in the head after all…. opened it so I could tweek the screws to tighten it and one of the screw buffer things is cracked 😮

Guess I’ll need to phone in the morning and see what happens now 🙄

we have contract with graphtec – fc-1300 model – recommended them anytime – not many problems mainly bearings – its 7 yrs old and still cutting fine – occassionly when cutting text is not cutting freely but jaggedly this is because of the small strip of tape that the blade goes up and down gets worn and follows the grove not ctting properly – 25 note for new strip
