Every time i try and print a Grey, its very speckled, i have spoken to Roland who advised different settings, ive used correct icc profiles for md7, tried different setting, roland advised that when it come to printing Grey its hard to print it as a solid colour? have you guys experienced this?

Where would that info be? im using versaworks rip, i selected high quality with correct metamark media and colouir profile, next to the word resolution, 1440×720 is greyed out.

The file itself is from corel draw 12, with a contour cut line around the outside, i exported it as an eps

    Any views?

    Hi
    try making your grey a tint of black as in C= 0% M= 0% Y= 0%
    Black= 5%-95%

at that res it should be a very smooth colour to the eye, but not under a magnifying glass. do you see specks of different colours.

no colour, just grey and white, roland did mention that it can lay colour around the grey, but all i can see, even from a distance is speckled grey/white.

I printed a job last week (Cadet / Vesacamm 540) that was predominantly solid greys – from very light to very dark. Without fail, it’s a mish-mash of speckled dots in every conceivable colour to get the dither & shade right. Up close under close scrutiny it’s quite noticeable…look from a couple of feet away & it’s pretty much perfect.

Unless you can do it as a monochrome dither using only black & dot size / spacing to achieve the tints – that’s probably the way it’s going to be as it’s not really a fault.

    quote Jonathan McGovern:

the grey i am printing is cmyk 30% black

In your RIP software – is there an option to do it in monochrome and not CMYK…then it can ONLY use black to achieve the tint. But it will be a tint of black…and probably even MORE speckled (although all black dots).

    Hi
in versaworks you can designate a certain colour as in
CMYK % to only print CMYK %. So if you specify K 30% then it will print K30 %. Not got Versaworks in front of me so can’t give you the full Sp

Chassis No. won’t help you, it searches for attached printers & won’t start if it doesn’t find one. It basically talks to the printer & asks for set up & ink type then loads the appropriate profiles etc.

Chris, Versaworks will only work if it finds a printer mate, but you only have to do it once, it will then work ok on its own.

I find the spot colour matching the best way to go using corel i give the colour a spot colour from the roland swatch . When I got the printer I ran the colour charts from the rip on to the different media’s

    thanks for info .

jon have you tried printing what you asked for in the quote forum on to a grey or flat silver vinyl.

i use image perfect 5700 for this sort of thing, the colours are altered by the non white background, but a tweek on the colour curves in the rip, can bring them back sometimes.

remember to save the altered profile to different name thou
