White wrap vinyl, what do you use?
Posted by Chris Foster on 6 August 2010 at 14:43Wrapping an Audi S4 very soon and the customer has requested to have the ‘glossiest’ white possible. The car is currently deep red so can understand why he wants to change it to white!!
What would you say the best white car wrap vinyl is to use. He’s a friend so not going to be charging fortunes to do it but on the other hand dont want to recommend cheap vinyl and shoot myself in the foot with fitting issues!
Opinions on what to go for? I’ve only ever used 3M and Hexis Hexpress wrap vinyl in the past.
Thanks

Just finished wrapping my metallic red Range Rover in white.
I used Grafityp white and quite happy with the result although it needed a lot of ‘working’!!!

I have tried, albeit briefly… the new 3M wrap, (colour change) which "for now" is more for cars and the like, but i hear its warranty is changing to cover recesses and the like.
This is an excellent wrap vinyl and one i am going to try out pretty soon… very easy to work with! will keep everyone posted on my finds when i do…I saw the new advert on UKSB homepage from Grafityp too… although i have not tried any of the films they offer i really like some of the special effects on offer. as many will have read in my posts the past few months, special effects and the like with wraps is something i see as the way forward when it comes to "car" wrapping…

Rob,
I agree completely, 3M 85 series is an excellent film, and my preferred choice of self coloured wrapping vinyl, and now has the addition of Controltac adhesive along with their CV3 (micro comply) air release feature, its a great product to work with and is so user friendly…. however…. As for 3m changing the warranty to cover recesses etc, this may be a little premature in truth!
There are going to be several field trials done on various recessed panel vans, indeed I myself have done some testing and have a deep recessed panel van under going trials as we speak, but I think it will be some time before these tests are conclusive, and for all I personally think the film is more capable than its intended use, the addition of CV3 will be a stern test for recesses. There are no immediate plans on 3M’s behalf to ‘warrant’ this film for these applications, however there may be a re-wording of the product bulletin and application guidelines to suit recessed panel vans.
3M are very conservative about their products as they offer comprehensive warranties, whereas most aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. They certainly won’t warrant a film before having conclusive evidence that it’s capable of it’s intended use, hence it was launched as a car wrap film.
I don’t mean to sound negative, but I just think it will be a long while yet, if at all, before this film is actually warranted for these types of applications.
