which vinyl will stick to polyethylene?
Posted by Darryl Seager on 9 March 2006 at 12:54Hi Team,
Is there a vinyl out there that will adhere to POLYETHYLENE??
I’ve tried all sorts but can’t seem to get a good adhesion to this material which is made doubly hard because its textured as well.
not looking for a mass of colours, red and black will be fine.

Oracal do a print vinyl for low impact plastics with a rubber based glue, can’t remember the code tho sorry. May be good to ring europoint and ask them. I seem to remember it was Oracal 820(?) but I could be wrong on that.

Sorry if you think we ignored you Darryl,
Truth is I tried to find some vinyl to do this but it is very dificult for anything to adhere to polymer plastic, in a lot of cases thats why its used, for its non stick properties. If you dont get an answer, its probably because no body has one.
Its also not good for everyone to answer in the negative.
Hope someone can help as it would be nice to know.

Thanks for the comments Peter
No i don’t think that i’m being ignored… just thought the trade ‘watchers’ would have been on that one, looks as if there a small market there.
i want the vinyl for the marking of some Compressors made by Atlas Copco. They have some trade mark decals fitted, and they seem to have good adhesion, so its probably a case of finding out who their supplier of these decals is, and go from there.
Lots of items in our core trade seem to made from Polyethlene these days. Water and Fuel bowsers, vehicle panels and various covers etc.

You couls alwys try Convex designed for application to low impact plastics and is very sticky compared to most normal vinyls. 3M do various rolls of glue backing on rolls for low impact plastics too very sticky and very expensive. I’m sure other manufacturers have the same products can’t help much more I’m afraid.

do you know of any UK suppliers of Convex Forbie??? i have seen their stuff on the website. I e-mailled Doug a few times and informed Steve Beckwith(Europoint) of the link and type of vinyls on offer to see if they could maybe import some.

actually that is a very good tip mate. I have used convex myself, they have material for plastic fuel tanks and other poly type materials. Not cheap but bril for unusual stuff.
