  • which vinyl is best for applying to a boat hull?

Posted by Paul Lester on 28 June 2007 at 15:48

    Hi All,

I am just starting out and need a bit of adivec on what vinyl to use to for dinghies?

I would like it to have a good life. The boats in question are normally stored outdoors in a compound but with a cover on. They are made from GRP with a light grey Epoxy gel coat. Any advice would be great

I have been looking at the replies to other posts and a few names pop up

    Avery 900SC

    Oracal 751c

    Oracal 551

    Avery 700

    Mactac 9800

    Please which is best?

    Cheers

    Paul :lol1:

Paul, firstly welcome to the boards.

I have been doing boat names for years and have used

751 and 9800 and also Grafityp 200/300, and never had a come back yet.

These are only the ‘names’ I do, so how much exposure the get to salt water I don’t really know.

I know Shane advises using a 3M vinyl which I think carries a guarantee.

    hope this helps.

i’ve used 751 on a good number of occasions, but only do it mail order, i’d guess that not all of the names i do go onto the hull,

    Hi Martin/Hugh,

Thanks for the quick reply. I have had a look at the 3M site and they do a vinyl called 3M™ Scotchcal™ ElectroCut™ Graphic Film Series 100, do you know if it is the one that shane uses? it is a cast that has a life of 10 years, but don’t know if it will be easy to apply?

I am thinking of using 9800 if the hull is flatish, then maybe using 751 if it needs to go around more of a curve.

    Thanks for your advice!

    Regards

    Paul

If the hulls have a gel coating be very careful about what you use. Is it a sort of rubbery coating at all. For normal pleasure type boats which are GRP or something similar I have used 751C loads of times and never had a problem but if there is a coating on these then I would experiment first, I have done a couple of little bits and pieces for an inflatable using truck vinyl but it was an experiment for a very good customer and he knew it might not last. Haven’t seen him for a while so not sure if it stayed on.

We do stacks of boats for 2 boatyards in the area, it was always 751 before and I was a wee bit apprehensive about changing to avery 700 but that’s about 2 years now and not a single issue with any.
