  • Which RS232 plotter cable to buy?

Posted by Richard James Martin on 21 June 2016 at 20:13

I needed a longer cable for my new Graphtec so bought one from eBay….doesn’t work.

Looking into it there seems to be 2 or 3 different types, straight, null modem, data…..

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Tried both my other cables which work fine but there’s no details on them and I already use the usb connection to another PC.

    Thanks.

As far as I know, the key phrase to look for is "fully wired". All pins wired.

5m for £5 online (although buy the shortest you can get away with and don’t bundle it with mains cables on a run).

Is it the 9 pin or 25 pin?

From memory Null Modem / crossover would be the preferred method.

Thanks Dave, it’s 9pin female to 25pin male.

If you want 1 long cable from computer to plotter , it must be a NULL Modem cable.
If you want to extend an existing working cable with an extension cable, it must be a plain MODEM cable.

RS232 is only supposed to be rated for 15 feet but I have seen longer work.
