  • which RIPs for mac

Posted by Peter Yip on 5 April 2008 at 13:47

Recently i have use mac machine more then my PCs in the office, and i am trying to get all the PC here out of the way to just have mac only.

as we have a CJ-500 pigment printer here, i was initially thinking of installing the ColorChoice that came with the printer but only just noticed it doesnt support the new Intel base Mac.

so that leave me with a question which RIP i can go for that are not too expensive.

mainly i need it for printing only, so i can setup all the print jobs and let it run. nesting and color management is important.

any suggestion would be grateful, thanks in advance.

    regards
    Peter

I would advise against getting rid of all PCs I have both MAc and PC on my network and regually recieve work created on each.
Would spend money on a new RIP if I have an existing rip that works keep 1 PC with the rip and if you get jobs in on a PC you can still do them.

Aside from the above reasoning and this is just my opinion if you have been using PCs you will be very disapointed trying to use a Mac only setup, they are just not as versatile.

Shiraz definitely runs on a Mac, but is likely to be expensive. Not sure why
Macs aren’t as versatile as PC’s. I’ve certainly never come across that, and
have never felt ‘very disappointed’, and I’ve been using them for 17 years.

i have been on mac for around 10years now, and never had any problem with it unlike the PC that we use every here now and then …

i was reading on the Shiraz thats one on the list so far, and i do know Caldera does a really good software for mac too but probably cost a bit too much.

never understand why RIP software are so expensive,

I put in my reply that this was just my opinion as I know how sensative mac usres are.
As I read the above you want to spend alot of money on a new rip when the only thing wrong with the old rip is it runs on a pc, had the question been what rip runs on windows the answer would be they all do, yet the answer so far to your question is a choice of 2, I hope they do want you want.

With regards to versatility my pc runs my rip software, my cad software for Octanorm, smartstamp for printing stamps, nokia phone software, my fuji camarea software, my remote skype phone, my 3d cad, dymo label porgram to name a few that do not run on the mac. Some 80% of the software i use in my business will not run on a mac so my opinion is they are not at all versatile.

I am bored of the mac pc debate and accept that if people are prepared to pay 4 x more for simalar products then big up to mac marketing.

    Russell.
