Which cutter?
Posted by Ben Smith on 6 October 2006 at 10:04As a total newbie hoping to start out very soon, i am looking at several different machines at the moment.
I am hoping to start off with a reasonable cutter and then when things pick up i will then start to look at vinyl printers instead.
Does this sound like a sensible route to take and if so, what cutters would people recommend?
Thanks!

Graphtec, Summa, Roland…. Ive used both Roland and Graphtec for years. I have both at the moment, 48inch wide and 54 inch wide vinyl cutters… ide say the Graphtec is the more reliable, tracks and loads far easier too, after sales support is great.

Graphtec are bomb-proof & track brilliantly – but a premium price.
Summa are very good also – but not quite as ‘perfect’ – but really good value.
(I use a Summa as I couldn’t justify the extra £2G+ for the Graphtec!)My Summa reliably tracks over 5m without any issues & came with free stand & media basket – and a good warranty.
Graphtec & summa load easily, graphtec has some advantages such as a font media sensor to auto align the start of the material.
My only experiance of Rolands are an ancient 600mm Camm1 & the original Color Camm printer/cutter – but that was MANY years ago.
Hope that helps.

dave, surely there cant be that big a gap in the pricing of graphtec over summa mate? ive always thought summa to be the more expensive machine?
you can buy a brand new 610 wide graphtec cutter with stand for under a grand… thats not including any uksg members discount. -

I’m just thinking that about 2 1/2 years ago when I bought my Summa, I looked at a Graphtec FC5100, and it was about £4500. – So I plonked for the Summa (always on a special offer) – no regrets.
eg.Victory currently selling Summa D120 – £2742.00 (rrp £4k) / Mimaki 1300 – £4745.00 /
Seems Graphtec is right down in price these days – the new FC7000 – 130 is going for £3250….
How times change!

yeh we paid around that for our 54inch wide one, still have it today running along side the roland. ive been toying with buying a new machine for months now but bought an excaliber and several other things instead…
however, ide have no hesitation in buying another 54inch graphtec. our machine runs constantly everyday, its a workhorse and has lasted me years without ever breaking down.machines are coming down in price it’s common with everything these days…
