I know its likely a stupid question, but we all have to start somewhere.

I’ve just got an order to letter three Transit type vans. How do I set a level for the first strip of letters? The rain gutter on the van slopes towards the front and there is no crease on the van side.

Do I just find somewhere perfectly flat to park the vehicle and then use a spirit level to mark a lin.

Nah, come on. Seriously, what sort of vans are they, because Transit are one of the easiest.

Whatever, don’t do the spirit level trick. That will make it level with the ground just until the end user throws his toolbox in the back.

Welcome to the boards by the way. 😀

Thanks for the welcome John. I’m actually in Texas – just moved from Yorkshire. I’m not sure what kind of vans they are, some kind of Chevy things I think.

I’ve been making rear window stickers for a while, there are lots of customers for those over here. So when someone said "can you do the side of my trucks?" – I just said "Yes" without thinking.

Now I need some help from the experts.

I’ve already made fundamental mistake number one. When you measure, don’t assume that both sides of the van are the same. The nearside has a half window in it. Ooopps..

    Alex.

I wondered what other silly sod was up at this time of the morning, but the Texas time difference explains that. A post in the "Say Hello" forum would be nice. 😀

It’s difficult to give advice without knowing the vehicle so maybe post up a photo if you can get one.

All I can say at the moment is that doing it by eye is out of the question because you have three vans (maybe more in the future?) so whatever you do must be repeatable and that means you need a datum line to measure from. Failing anything else, consider measuring from the sill upwards. That normally works.
