  • where can i find Translucent pearlescent window vinyl?

    Hi All

I’m looking for the above, my customer saw a window done in London with a "metallic rainbow" effect (pearlescent) but was also semi transparent as he could see through it.

The only thing I can think of is a vehicle window tint but how would that be cut on a plotter 😕

Does anybody have any idea as to if something like this is available and where? All the ones I’ve seen are not transparent 😕

    cheers

    Warren

    Hi Warren

It sounds like 3M Radiant Light Film – It’s available in a transparent mirror finish and there are two colours available CM500 (self adhesive product code 76922) and CM592 (self adhesive product code 76923) sorry can’t describe the exact colour as it changes when viewed at the various angles.

Product is sold through 3M Industrial Adhesives and Tapes division – available in non adhesive and self adhesive versions. I think it was designed primarily for the packaging industry and can be laminated over printed card boxes so print shows through mirror (used on perfume packaging etc) Don’t think there is any reason why it couldn’t be used for signage/graphics but you would need to check outdoor lifetime.

Sorry I have no info on pricing as we do not deal with this division of 3M normally – It might be sold through the tapes distribution network but I am not sure if there would be a minimum order size.

Google "3M Radiant light Film" and contact 3M direct ….they won’t sell it direct but should put you in touch with a distributor that holds the product

A metallic rainbow could be made up by using coloured window film backed up by a silver window film.
From the outside this would look like a reflective rainbow yet it could still be seen through from the inside looking out.
This is a good supplier of coloured films

and this site shows a tutorial of backing colour with silver

Not exactly sure of the effect you are describing but some examples of colour bands are shown on the sweet shops in their gallery and they have a rainbow here on a car graphic as the Dark Side of the Moon Logo

I’m sure a very effective rainbow could be made up like this if the customer was willing to pay for all the film & time.
Tint can be cut on a plotter but tolerances would have to be adjusted. I have different settings on my plotter for tint and vinyl and use a different blade. Not sure if all plotters would do this.
One tip to make tint feed & cut better in a standard plotter is to premask the backing with a layer of application paper before cutting.
